국문 초록

본 논문은 ‘조선서학’이 조선후기 사상사에서 주변적 사건이 아니라, 새로운 시대를 열어가는 가장 활성적 요인으로 파악해야 한다고 제안하면서 조선후기 사상사를 ‘도학-실학’의 이원구조가 아니라, ‘도학-실학-서학’의 복합구조로 보아야 한다고 주장한다. ‘조선서학’에서 서양근세 과학지식은 ‘도학’이념이 구축한 중국중심의 세계관을 허물고, 동양과 서양이 소통하는 새로운 세계관을 열어주었으며, 또한 천주교신앙은 유교적 신념체계와 사회질서에 큰 충격을 주었다. 일찍이 예수회의 보유론(補儒論)은 유교경전과 천주교교리를 조화시켜 해석함으로써 동서사상의 소통을 가능하게 해주었다. 하지만 18세기말 이후 100년 동안 ‘조선서학’은 예수회의 적응정책을 포기하고 제사를 금지하면서 유교와의 대화의 통로를 잃고 정면충돌을 초래하였다. 본 논문은 이에 따라 조선사회가 ‘서학’으로부터 근대적 전환의 계기를 얻지 못하고 폐쇄되어 자멸의 길을 갔고, ‘서학’은 조선사회와 문화전통 속에 뿌리내릴 기회를 상실하고 외래종교로 머물게 되었던 문제점을 지적하면서 ‘조선서학’의 의미를 재음미한다.

영문 초록

This paper argues that “Seohak” (Western Learning) was not a marginal, but a major factor in opening a new era in late Chosun Dynasty, and that the history of thought in late Chosun should be approached not in terms of a dual structure of “Dohak” (Neo-Confucian Learning) and “Silhak” (Practical Learning), but from the perspective of the more complicated situation of interactions among “Dohak,” “Silhak,” and Seohak. “The scientific knowledge of the Modern West in “Seohak” broke down the China‐centered worldview established by the ideology of “Dohak” and opened up a new worldview through which the East and the West could communicate with each other. In addition, the Catholic faith made a huge impact on the Confucian belief system and social order. With their “theory of [Christianity as] fulfillment of Confucianism,” Jesuit missionaries in China made communication between Eastern and Western thought possible by an interpretative method that harmonizes the Confucian scriptures and Catholic doctrine. However, “Seohak” of the late Chosun Dynasty (late 18th to late 19th century) abandoned the Jesuit missionary policy of ‘accommodation’ and banned the rite of ancestor worship. As a result, it came to block the passageway of dialogue with the Confucianism to the effect of causing a head‐on collision between the two ways of thought. As a result, the Chosun society, having failed to draw momentum from “Seohak” for a turn to modernity, went its way to self‐destruction by closing itself from the world. On its part, “Seohak” lost its opportunity to take roots in the cultural tradition of Chosun society and so came to remain as a foreign religion.
