국문 초록

본 연구는 부모 대신 지적장애인의 주 부양자로서 살아 온 형제들의 생애사를 분석함으로써 이들의 삶을 이해하고 이들이 필요로 하는 사회적 지원을 가능하게 하는 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행되었다. 연구자는 유의표집 방법으로 2명의 연구참여자들을 선정했으며, 연구참여자들을 대상으로 2008년 6월부터 2009년 12월에 걸쳐 심층 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 수집된 연구 자료의 분석을 위해서는 Mandelbaum의 생애사 분석 방법이 적용되었고, 삶의 차원들, 전환점, 적응이라는 세 가지 영역별 분석이 수행되었다. 연구결과, 사회문화적 차원에서는 ‘형제 부양을 특이하게 보는 사회적 시선’과 ‘장애인에 대한 편견과 차별’이, 심리적 차원에서는 ‘나 혼자라고 느껴지는 고립감’과 ‘동생에 대한 사랑과 연민’이 연구참여자들의 삶에 주요한 영향력을 미치는 파워로 확인되었다. 그리고 연구참여자들에게 있어 ‘부모님의 사망’은 이들의 삶을 변화시킨 첫 번째 전환점이었으며, ‘자살시도 실패’와 ‘부정적인 타인의 시선으로 인한 스트레스’는 각 연구참여자들에게 두 번째 전환점이 되었다. 또한 연구참여자들은 두 번의 전환점을 기준으로 자신에게 발생된 변화들에 적응하기 위해 각기 다른 대처방식들을 사용하고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 이에 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 연구자는 장애인에 대한 사회적 편견 감소를 가능하게 하는 전사회적 인식 개선사업 및 지역사회 자원을 활용한 직접적 개입 서비스 시행, 부모사망 이전 시기에 지적장애인의 미래계획 수립을 위한 지원시스템 조기 적용, 주 부양자인 형제들의 개별적 적응 방식을 토대로 수립된 개별화 개입 계획의 수행 및 이들의 적응을 돕기 위한 사회적 지원책의 확대를 제언하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to understand the lives of those who provide caregiving to their adult siblings with intellectual disabilities by life history analysis. This understanding will provide basic information about the support needs of sibling caregivers in order to facilitate support services for sibling caregivers. In-depth interview was conducted with two participants who were selected by purposive sampling between June 2008 and December 2009. Guided by Mandelbaum's analysis method, these interviews were analyzed focusing on three areas: the dimensions of a person's life, the principal turning points, and the adaptation. This study found that ‘society that views sibling caregivers as unusual' ‘discrimination against and prejudice towards disabilities' were socio-cultural factors which influence caregivers' lives. Also, ‘isolation' and ‘love and sympathy for their siblings with intellectual disabilities' were found as significant psychological factors that impact caregivers' lives. The participants had two principal turning points that changed their lives. The first turning point was ‘deaths of their parents'. The second turning points were ‘failed her suicide attempts' and ‘stress caused by negative attitudes toward disabilities'. Sibling caregivers made their own efforts in order to adjust themselves to these principle turning points. There were several practical implications to these findings. These implications include campaigning for change of attitude toward people with disabilities, direct services, services which provide before parents dies in order to prepare the puture planning for person with intellectual disabilities, individualized intervention for sibling caregivers based on their individualized ways of adaptation, and developing social support services to help caregiver's adaptation.
