A great amount of research has been done on the native song [hyangga, 鄕歌] of ‘Suhdong’ presumed to have been written sometime at the end of the Three Kingdoms period(approximately 600 A.D.) in ancient Korea. This native song consists of 25 Chinese characters and illustrates a romantic story between the then commoner of the Baekje Kingdom and the third princess of King Jinpyung of the Silla Kingdom. This simple poetic song has been a tempting research topic from many different perspectives: linguistics, literature, history, Buddhist history, art history, and archaeology. A wide variety of papers ranging from the interpretation of each word to historical and archaeological contexts of the native song have continued to be published. This paper emphasizes the importance of the historical context, the affairs taking place between the Baekje and Silla Kingdoms. A limited number of Korean historians have accepted the native song as historical fact, and they have tried to justify the story of the song through historical sources as well as archaeological evidence. In particular, considering the historical document of the Samguk yusa as historical fact, they argue that there was a national wedding between the Silla and Baekje Kingdoms. Moreover, they suggested that King Mu of Baekje (i.e., son-in-law of the king of Silla) sent a great deal of gold to Silla; when Baekje was constructing one of the biggest Buddhist Temples(彌勒寺) in Korea. King Jinpyung of Silla(i.e., father-in-law of the king of Baekje) sent one hundred masons: to help Baekje on the one hand, and to make these artisans learn good architectural skills of Baekje on the other hand. In this paper, however, I argue that that is not the case, and there is no convincing evidence of the wedding and of friendly interactions between the two countries. On the contrary, according to the historical record of the Samguk sagi, the relationship between the two kingdoms began to deteriorate from the middle of the sixth century A.D. onward and culminated during the first-half of the seventh century A.D. As a matter of fact, the most frequent military collisions and warfare took place during the first-half of the seventh century between the two countries (i.e., allegedly between father-in-law and son-in-law). On the basis of the intense political circumstances of the two kingdoms that appear in historical documents of the Samguk sagi, I come to the conclusion that ‘Suhdong’ of the native song is not related with King Mu of Baekje and there was no national wedding between the Silla and Baekje Kingdoms. I also suggest that historians must treat the native song of ‘Suhdong’ not as a historical fact but just a mythical story.
