영문 초록

This paper discusses the distribution and interpretation of null pronouns in English when approached from an Optimality Theory perspective. I argue that the constraint violability playa a very important role in both the distribution and the interpretation of the null pronouns. I claim that we can not only simplify the statements of the null pronoun principles, but also account for certain data that have eluded previous theories by elevating this violability to a central place in the grammar. It is also shown that the different hierarchy of the same universal constraints can nicely explain why Korean allows quite free distribution of null pronouns in the subject and object positions in contrast to English in which it is only in tenseless subject position.
