국문 초록

본 논문은 근대 가톨릭교회의 주요한 영성가인 아빌라의 성녀 데레사의 기도에 관한 가르침 가운데 특히 능동적 기도 단계에 주목하고, 그에 속하는 기도의 방식들을 그 연관성 가운데 체계적으로 검토하여 성녀의 생각을 충실하고 분명하게 제시하는 것이 목적이다. 그것은 대개 신비적 기도의 차원에 초점이 맞춰진 채 기도에 대한 성녀의 생각이 제시되어 왔기 때문이다. 따라서 본 논문은 기도에 대한 성녀의 가르침이 갖는 보다 실제적인 측면에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 하는 것이다. 그런데 성녀 데레사의 전망에 따른 영적 여정 안에서 능동적 기도단계는 초자연적인 관상기도에 이르기 전까지의 단계로 인간이 자신의 노력으로 하는 기도들로 구성되며, 그들은 ‘구송 기도’, ‘추리-묵상 기도’, ‘능동적 거둠 기도’이다. 이 기도 방식들에 대한 성녀 데레사의 생각을 정확히 알아보기 위해, 성녀의 주요 작품들에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 그간의 연구 성과들을 참조하는 가운데 이 기도들과 기도생활에 있어서의 그들의 연관성에 관해 구체적으로 살펴본다. 이렇게 하여 본 논문은 성녀 데레사의 능동적 기도 단계에 대한 가르침이 오늘의 신앙인들에게도 여전히 유효하며 그 방법들이 영성생활을 보다 높은 차원으로 이끌어주는 효과적 수련임을 제안한다.

영문 초록

St. Teresa of Avila was a major spiritual figure in the modern Catholicism and her teachings on prayer are still influential. With the purpose of presenting faithfully and clearly St. Teresa’s thought on prayer, the paper focuses on and studies systematically the modes of prayer belonging to the stage of active prayer. It is because, in presenting the saint’s teachings on prayer, attention has been generally given only to the dimension of mystical prayer. The paper, however, wishes to promote better understanding of a more practical dimension of the saint’s teachings on prayer. From St. Teresa’s perspective, the stage of active prayer in the spiritual journey is a phase in which prayer reaches to a threshold of supernatural contemplative prayer. It consists of prayers that the human person actively practices with his or her own efforts: ‘vocal prayer’, ‘discursive meditation’, and ‘active recollection’. In order to gain precise understanding of St. Teresa’s thought on these modes of prayer, the paper examines them closely in their connection with each other in prayer life. It does so by an analysis of the saint’s major works while taking into account of results of previous research. In this way, the paper maintains that St. Teresa’s teachings on the stage of active prayer be still relevant to today’s Christians as it presents effective methods of exercises that lead to a higher level of spiritual life.
