일본 전통의 불교식 葬禮文化와 그 변화 양상

국문 초록

본고는 일본의 전통적 장례문화가 형성된 과정과 그것에 대한 구체적인 내용, 그리고 그 변화의 양상을 고찰한 글이다. 일본에서 불교식의 葬禮와 祭禮가 시행되고 있는 사실에 대한 역사적 배경과 함께 장례와 제례의 절차, 내용 등을 살펴본 것이다. 일본의 전통 장례문화는 중세 때 나타난 民衆佛敎와 조상숭배 신앙이 결합하여 형성되었고, 이것이 근대의 檀家制度를 통해서 제도적으로 정착되었다. 이 과정에서 일본 고유의 불교 형태인 葬儀佛敎도 형성되었다. 일본의 전통 장례문화는 민간신앙과 외래종교인 불교가 결합한 것으로서 이것을 크게 葬禮와 祭禮로 구분하여 검토하였다. 일본에서의 장례와 제례는 불교의례에 의거해 죽은 사람의 死靈을 조상신으로 승화시켜 가는 과정이었다. 장례는 臨終으로 시작하여 유골의 매장 의식까지, 그리고 제례는 初7일 법요부터 33회기의 의례와 연중행사인 오봉(お盆), 히강(彼岸)의 조상공양으로 이어진다. 이러한 전통 장례문화는 아직도 일본에서는 지켜지고 있지만 사회변동과 더불어 많은 내적 변화를 겪고 있다. 그 변화의 양상은 의례에 있어서 종교적 색채가 약화되고, 또 간소화되는 경향을 보이고 있다. 그리고 墓制는 火葬이 일반화되어 가족 納骨墓로 획일화 되고 있다. 최근에는 불교식 장례와 전혀 관련이 없는 無宗敎葬, 直葬, 그리고 散骨, 樹木葬까지 등장하여 앞으로의 장례문화에 더욱 더 많은 변화를 예고하고 있다.

영문 초록

This research looked into the backgrounds of the traditional funeral culture which has formed in Japan, its contents and transformation. This thesis treated the historical development, procedure and contents of funeral and ancestral rituals which have been performed in Japan. The traditional funeral culture of Japan was formed with an ancestor worship peculiar to Japan and the popular Buddhism of the Middle Ages, and took root through the danka(檀家) system. In this process funeral Buddhism made its appearance in Japan. The traditional funeral culture of Japan was divided into funeral ceremonies and ancestral rituals, and these are examined in this paper. Funeral ceremonies and ancestral rituals of Buddhism are ceremonies sublimating ghosts into ancestor spirits. Funeral ceremonies are rituals performed from dying to the storage of bones store, and ancestral rituals mean the Buddhist service from the 7th day to the 33th anniversary of ancestors’ death praying for souls and annual events such as Obong(お盆), Higang(彼岸). Though the traditional funeral culture is still maintained in Japan, many internal changes have happened accompanied social ones. First of all, changes include that the Buddhist influence over ceremonies is being weakened, and simplified. Accordingly as cremation is generalized, a type of tomb is being conformed to the charnel house for family. Recently, many types of funerals, which are not related to Buddhist funerals, are appearing; for example a direct cremation, an irreligious funeral, natural burials, and so on therefore it is clear that many aspects have dramatically changed.
