국문 초록

이 연구는 자신의 작품을 통해 여성해방론을 주장하고 실천하려고 했던 신여성 나혜석의 작품을 분석함으로써 나혜석에 대한 폭넓은 이해와 신여성으로 활동했던 나혜석을 통해 신여성들에 대한 인식을 새롭게 자리매김하고 나혜석의 페미니스트로서의 기질을 살펴보려는 것을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 먼저 나혜석이 쓴 작품의 분석을 통해 작품에서 나타나는 여성해방사상의 주장과 그 실천양상에 따라 두 가지로 분류해서 살펴보았다. 하나는 자유주의 여성해방사상의 성격이 드러나는 글로, 이 작품들에서는 주체적인 삶을 위한 여성교육의 필요성과 인본주의에 바탕을 둔 남녀평등, 봉건적 사회가 가지고 있는 기존의 결혼에 대한 인식에서 벗어나 자유연애와 자유결혼을 주장하는 결혼에 대한 인식의 변화가 잘 드러나고 있다. 또 다른 하나는 급진적인 성격이 강하게 드러나는 작품들로, 이 작품들에서는 그동안 여성들에게 강요되고 신화화된 모성에 대해서 새롭게 정의하는 한편, 가부장제적 이데올로기에 대한 강한 저항과 가부장적 권력의 폭력성을 자신의 글을 통해 드러내고 있다. 또한 나혜석은 당시 여성들에게만 강요되어지던 정조론에 대해 강력하게 비판하는 한편 정조란 여성들에게만 강요되어지는 것이며, 정조란 법률로 정하거나 강요되어지는 것이 아닌 개인의 취향이며 취미일 뿐이라고 자신의 글을 통해 주장하고 있다. 이처럼 나혜석의 작품에 나타나는 여성해방사상이 자유주의에서 급진적으로 변화하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 나혜석이 살았던 당시의 시대적 상황과 나혜석 자신이 실제 생활에서 겪게 되는 경험들의 차이에서 비롯된 것이라 할 수 있다. 연구결과를 모두 종합해 보면, 나혜석은 여성으로서 많은 한계 상황 속에서도 작품을 통해 자신의 여성해방사상을 주장하고 자신의 전 삶을 통해 여성해방을 실천하려고 했던 시대를 앞선 페미니스트라는 것을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

Through the analysis of Na Hye-Seok's literary works, which supported the liberation of women, this thesis intends to right the wrongs of our understanding and establish a new perception of New Women as well as examine the spirit of Na Hye-Seok as a feminist. This thesis divides Na Hye-Seok's works into two parts; her thoughts on feminism and how those ideas are put into practice. Na Hye-Seok's nature was liberal. Her writings display this nature through her positive view on and push for the education of women. The ideas Na Hye-Seok supported were independent lives for women, sexual equality, free love and open marriage. She maintained that this type of liberation would be possible by way of education. She also expressed that the existing marriage views of women involved the feudal system. As such education could open women's minds and was a necessity in the fight for equality. Given her character of a radical feminist, she gave a new definition of enforced and mythified motherhood. She revealed a strong resistance to patriarchal ideology as well as violence by way of patriarchal power through her writings, Na Hye-Seok also criticized the notion of chastity, which at the time was a practice reserved only for women. She insisted that chastity should not be forced by law or by any other means. Such practices, she believed should be followed according to personal preference. Her writings during this period were quite revolutionary and shocked the people of that time. After putting the results of this research work together, it is obvious that Na Hye-Seok was a woman who advocated for feminism through her literary works. She did so under a stressful and suppressed social situation and chose to practice feminism for her entire life. She was, without a doubt, a feminist who was ahead of her time.
