The goal of this essay is to evaluate Calvin's contribution to biblical interpretation by exploring his hermeneutic principles in relation to four hermeneutic coordinates: reality, author, text, and reader. The first co-ordinate is the reality which the text refers to in the real world, such as historical events or theological concepts. This was the main concern of the traditional interpretation before the rise of biblical criticism. Calvin regarded the Bible as the unique repository of knowledge of God and for salvation. For the divine knowledge, however, Calvin rejected allegorical interpretation which was dominant in the medieval church. Instead he held to literal interpretation looking for the natural sense of the text. The second co-ordinate is author, the producer of text, which has been the major concern of the modern hermeneutics since Schleiermacher especially for the historical critical interpreters. Calvin also highlighted the importance of authors' intention and insisted that we read the text in light of its original context. Yet, unlike modern historical critical scholars, Calvin accepted the credibility of the text as it is. The third co-ordinate is the text itself as the object of interpretation. This is the core factor of synchronic approaches to biblical interpretation which began in the middle of the 20th century. Calvin also focused on the biblical text holding to the reformers motto "Sola Scriptura" and "Analogia Scripturae," though he would not accept the modern concept of text autonomy, which separates the text from its author and historical context. The fourth co-ordinate is reader, the receiver of text or the subject of interpretation. This has been highlighted most recently by post-modern hermeneutics as well as reader response theories. The role of the reader is also an important point in Calvin's hermeneutic principles as he or she needs the Holy Spirit's illumination during the process of interpretation. Calvin also admitted the relativity of our interpretation, but this is not because he thought the meaning is undetermined in the text but because he knew our own limits as human beings and sinners. Therefore, he insisted that we should ask humbly for the Holy Spirit's guidance and respect each other while pursuing the absolute truth of God in the Bible. In conclusion, Calvin's hermeneutic principles are sound as it integrates the four hermeneutic co-ordinates, so they can be good instructions and role models even for today.
