This thesis aims to reexamine the significance of the Reformation through the eyes of the 21st Century. Various attempts to illuminate the significance of the Reformation with reference to the 16th and 17th Centuries have been proposed. They contribute considerably to our understanding of the social, cultural, historical, philosophical and theological environment at the time of the Reformation and what affect this had on European society. However, it is considered that the Reformation movement that occurred in the 16th and 17th Centuries cannot give a complete answer to our 21st Century lives. Nearly 500 years have passed since the Reformation; the 5 centuries have seen many changes. The question as to whether the values of 5 centuries-past still hold is seen to be of considerable importance to the professants of the Reformed faith. If one was to claim that the banners of the Reformation are still applicable to the 21st Century, the interrelationship between the Reformation and Modernism must be considered. Many overlook the fact that both Modernism and the Reformation started as attempts to replace the giant time period known as the Middle Ages. We must especially focus on the fact that the ideological foundations of the Renaissance that gave rise to early Modernism was not unrelated to that of the Reformers. There is much debate as to who the father of Modernism was and when it was started, but it is widely recognized that the roots lie in 'the Renaissance-Enlightenment Movement'. This is fundamentally similar for the Reformation. The scholars that contributed to laying the foundations for the Reformation were largely Humanists influenced by the Renaissance. Both Modernism and the Reformation started as an ideological response to the Middle Age view of the world. Modernism sought answers in human self-awareness, whereas the Reformers found their answers in the history of human decay; the two movements started with the same aim to replace the world view of the Middle Ages but differed in their approaches of accomplishing the goal. However, with the rise of Postmodernism 400 years later, the ideological limit of Modernism was reached. Although this is still very much a matter of debate, it is the writer's view that Postmodernism is not a movement to replace Modernism but a pathological phenomenon that arose from the process of collapse of Modernism. History shows us that, 400 years on, Modernism could not answer the call to replace the world view of the Middle Ages. This paper aims to show that the validity of the Reformation still holds in the 21st Century by understanding the Reformation and Modernism.
