영문 초록

John Piper tries to reinterpret Westminster Shorter Catechism 1 by changing one word 'and' into 'by'. That is, he contends that "Man's chief end is to glorify God by enjoying him forever." For Piper God is firstly concerned on his own delight. God would like to communicate and share this delight with creatures, especially with us. So God is definitely pleased when we enjoy him and our lives. Piper designates his own assertion like this as a term "Christian Hedonism." Roughly speaking this Christian Hedonism has no main problem conflicted to essential tenets of Reformed theology. Nevertheless I think that it has two minor problems. The first problem is related to the term "Christian Hedonism" itself. On hedonism many objections have been raised throughout the history of philosophy and ethics. So Piper has to struggle with the whole history of them if he continues to hold the word "hedonism" for his own view. The second problem of Piper's "Christian Hedonism" comes from the effect of Jonathan Edwards on Piper. Piper leans on Edwards even excessively.
