This study inquires the process of the paradigm shift in overseas Christian professional missions and its necessity in Korean Christian history. Ever since in the flourishing of the Christianity in Korea there were plenty of professional missionaries sent to overseas countries in which they were mostly unreached by the Christian gospel yet. In some past centuries it might almost have seemed that the laity had no mission. The Lord, it was said, had assigned the mission to evangelize the world to the apostles and their successors. Since the word apostle means someone sent, a herald, an emissary, it might seem that persons not in the apostolic succession could not be sent. Throughout the Middle Ages and early modern times, lay people were active in the world, but ordinarily played a rather passive role in the Church. Other lay persons were scholars and apologists for the faith, but official documents of the Church did not speak of them as having a mission or ministry, terms that were commonly applied to the Church and to the clergy but not to the laity. However, due to the rapid growth of mission history that happened relatively in a short term; a great number of Churches start to send their own missionaries to overseas countries. From the very beginning of sending missionaries to foreign countries the Churches have sent mostly pastor missionaries and they were thought to be professional back then. The Korean churches became the most powerful fragment of mission history in the world. The concept of the way of the mission has gradually changed throughout the world so the Korean Churches follow as well. These changes were mainly caused by the situations of the mission target countries and the growing intense between the other native beliefs and Christianity. In some cases, people from Islamic countries showed their hatred to the people from Christian countries; for instance, some religious officials were being kidnapped and killed just because they were from christian country. That's why the official church members like pastors don't do their mission activities in those countries. In that case, Lay ministers took over their positions instead. With the changes of the above-mentioned atmosphere the strategy of mission should be changed and modified. Ours is not a time for rivalry between clergy and laity, or between lay ministers and apostles to the world, as if what was given to the one were taken away from the other. Only through cooperation among all her members can the Church live up to his divine calling. Just as 14 the eye cannot say to the ear, “I have no need of you,” so the lay minister and the social reformer, the contemplative religious and the parish priest must say to each other: I need your witness and assistance to discern and live up to my own vocation in the Body of Christ. Because the lay faithful constitute the overwhelming majority of Christian Churches, the future of the Church lies predominantly in their hands. The recognition recently given to lay ecclesial ministries should help the laity to rise to the challenges and opportunities that are theirs today. The main purpose of this paper is to focus on this subject so that we could find out more effective way to fulfill the mission of God, and some of these are presented as a result of the study. As a conclusion, sending laity missionaries with professional skills instead of pastors could be the best alternative way of replacing church leader level mission.
