중학교 영어 교과서 대화문의 젠더적 분석

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 중학교 1학년 영어 교과서 4종을 대상으로 대화문을 젠더 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 양성 평등의 시각에 기초한 영어 교과서의 편찬에 일조하는 것이다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 언어 형식을 포함한 문장의 성별 발화 비율을 분석한 결과, 모든 교과서에서 대화문의 남녀 등장인물의 역할은 남성의 비중이 여성에 비해 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 반복해서 강조되고 있는 언어 형식이 포함된 문장을 발화한 성별 비율과 함께, 대화문을 시작한 첫 발화자의 성별 역시 남성이 여성에 비해 높게 분석됐다. 셋째, 성별 언어형식의 발화 수를 발화의 상황과 장소와 연관시켜 살펴본 분석에서 남성은 가정 밖의 공간인 공적 영역에서 더 많은 언어형식의 발화를 한 반면, 여성은 가정 안의 공간인 사적 영역에서 더 많은 언어형식의 발화가 이루어졌다. 그리고 연구 결과와 더불어 앞으로의 양성 평등의 교과서 편찬을 위한 3가지 제안을 하였다. 이 같은 분석 결과를 볼 때, 4종의 중학교 1학년 영어 교과서는 여전히 성 차별적 요소를 포함하고 있었다. 출판사에 따라 교과서의 대화문 속의 성별 등장인물의 비율에 차이가 있었으나, 남성 등장인물에 대한 선호도는 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 글로벌 인재육성을 목표로 하는 외국어 교육에 있어서 양성 평등의 교과 콘텐츠의 제공은 학습자에게 올바른 성 가치관과 성 역할의 형성에 필수적이다. 이러한 목표를 효과적으로 달성하기 위해서는 양성 평등의 시각에 기초한 교과서가 필요하다고 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the dialogues in order to detect the dominant features of sex discrimination in Korean middle school English textbooks. The analysis was restricted to four best-selling middle school English textbooks designed to teach first-year students. The results of the study are as follows: First, the frequency rate of sentence utterances shows that males produce 81 sentences whereas females produce 58 sentences. In the analysis of the rate of the first initiator of the dialogue, the rate of males was higher than that of females. Second, the distribution of male and female characters in the dialogues indicated that male characters appear more frequently. Third, the gender of characters was closely related to the situation and place of utterances. In the case of men, these utterances mainly happened in so-called social places such as the work place, school, post office and street. On the other hand, women spoke mostly inside the house, which reflects the traditional gender roles. Also, a detailed analysis of 3 dialogue types was included in this paper. Recently, equal education based on gender equality has become a worldwide trend, especially in this age of the global village. It is also suggested that English textbooks should be published from the perspective of gender equality.
