남성노인의 배우자 돌봄에 대한 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 최근 점증하는 남성노인의 배우자돌봄이라는 현실에 주목하여 그간 충분히 검토되지 못한 돌봄의 쌍방적 측면과 관계적 성격, 돌봄경험의 서사적 특징 및 남성돌봄자의 젠더정체성의 문제를 분석하고자 한 것이다. 그리고 남성들의 돌봄경험의 질을 ‘여성적 잣대’를 기준으로 평가하지 않고 그 자체로 온전하게 이해하고자 하였다. 연구사례는 인지장애는 없으나 거동이 어려운 부인과 그를 돌보는 남편으로 이루어진 노부부 가구의 4쌍을 대상으로 하였다. 연구결과, 사례 노부부들의 배우자 돌봄은 부부의 애정이나 부부관계의 역사와 같은 관계적 자원이 매우 크게 작용하고 있었다. 특히 돌봄 이전 부부관계의 친밀성의 정도와 유형, 과거와의 연속과 단절에 대한 인식, 서로간의 역할에 대한 상호인정과 평가 사이의 복잡한 상호작용이 돌봄의 질과 의미를 다르게 구성하는 원인이 되고 있었다. 그러나 이러한 특성 이외에도 노부부간의 배우자 돌봄은 돌봄제공자 스스로가 노인이라는 점과 노인들만 있는 고립된 공간에서 거의 전적으로 혼자 돌봄을 책임져야 하는 상황에 크게 좌우되고 있었다. 비공식적 가족돌봄에 대한 정책의 부족, 여타 가족원의 지원 부재, 그럼에도 가족돌봄을 이상화하는 사회적 담론 등은 부부돌봄밖에 선택할 수 없게 만드는 구조적 제약요인이 되고 있었다. 따라서 부부관계가 친밀한 관계의 역사가 아닌 한, 부부돌봄은 오히려 가장 고립적이고 부담이 큰 돌봄형태가 될 수 있었음이 드러났다. 한편 남성들의 돌봄경험을 ‘여성적 기준’으로 평가하지 않고 온전하게 이해하고자 하였는데,사례 돌봄제공자들은 성역할 사회화에 기반하여 한정된, “남성적인”인 돌봄행위를 하는 것이 아니라 상황적 요구에 대응하면서 신축적으로 돌봄행위를 구성하고 있었다. 이들은 이상적 남성성과 현재의 처지 사이에서 다양한 방식으로 협상하여 자신의 남성성을 재규정, 유지하고 있었고, 여기에는 ‘남편’으로서의 의무와 책임감이라는 서사가 중요한 틀이었다.

영문 초록

This research aims to analyze the experiences of the elderly husbands' caregiving for their sick wives, focussing the relational aspects of the spousal care and the construction of gender identity in caring. Four couples of husbands, and wives who are physically sick but not with dementia are selected for this purpose. The eight narratives of husbands and wives on the life history and care history are analyzed each along the story lines without fragmenting the stories. The care is essentially a relational work, embedded in the specific human. In this study caring was examined in the perspective of the marital relationship of the couple and its history. Moreover how the men in the old age adjust their gender identities in times of transition to the new role of caring wives was also our interest. The results are as follows: the spousal cares at their old age are greatly influenced by their marital relationships before the transition to the caring phase. The relational resources like intimacy and recognition of the spousal contribution to marriage are important. So in case of the couples with poor relational resources the spousal cares by the old husbands are poor in quality and troublesome. Moreover the carer's old age and their separate living arrangement with no children make the care burdensome. Deficiency of the support for the family care and the dominance of the discourses idealizing the family care contribute to worsen the situation of the spousal care among old persons. Meanwhile this study also tried to understand men's care not by the 'feminine yardstick', but by their own experiences. Their care activities don't fit to the stereotype of male gender properly. They construct caring flexibly in different situations, and negotiate between ideal masculinity and their present positions.
