영문 초록

This article examines marriage migration of Central Asian muslim to the Korean society. It explores 6 different countries from Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan. However, since the most of the marriage migrants are from Uzbekistan, Kygryzstan, Kazakhstan, in-depth interview were done from these countries. During the in-depth interview biography of ten marriage migrants from different Central Asian countries were taken and analyzed. Along with the in-depth interview, this research has utilized the Census from the immigration office of Korea, 1991~2008. By analyzing the census data the author tried to outline the muslim marriage migrants of Central Asia in Korean society. Based on fieldwork among Kazak, Uzbek, Kyrgyz marriage migrants, the article tried to examine the peculiarity and present state of Central Asian marriage migrants in Korea. It investigates not only the general situation of the Central Asian Muslim marriage migrants in Korea but also explores their adaptation and attitude toward the Korean community. While explaining their adaptation process in Korea, this article shows how the Central Asian marriage migrants broke cliche´s and common stereotypes about Muslims. Their openness and flexibility toward Islam made them a successful adapter in the Korean society. Their such peculiarities challenge the monolithic perception of Muslims in Korea and show various types of Muslim communities.
