미국문화 읽기와 ‘비판적인 다인종 다문화 페미니즘’

국문 초록

미국이 그 정점에 있는 지구화 시대에 ‘문화적인 것’, ‘차이들’은 세계시장에서 동질화되고 있으며 서로 연결되지 못한 채 파편화되고 있다. 미국문화 읽기는 바로 그러한 현실에서 자신의 주체됨의 문제를 성찰하는 데서 비롯된다. 미국문화를 읽는다는 것은 문화를 일단 서사(narrative)로 개념화하는 것이다. 미국문화 서사들은 백인 미국만이 아니라 토착 미국, 아프리카계 미국, 치카노 미국, 아시아계 미국 등의 영역들로 구성되어 있어 ‘다인종 다문화(multiethnic)’ 서사라고 불릴 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 미국의 다인종 다문화 서사들을 읽어내는 방법론적 기반으로서 ‘공통성과 차이의 문화 정치학’이 제시된다. 이것은 화합하면서도 갈등을 일으키는 성, 인종, 계급적으로 많은 다양한 집단들을 서로 연결짓고 비교하는 데 필요한 입장이다. 이론적 기반으로서 제시되는 ‘비판적인 다인종 다문화 페미니즘’ 관점은 인종과 계급과 젠더의 역학을 중시하며 반인종차별적․ﾛ반자본주의적인 페미니즘적 사회정의를 실천하는 액티비즘 전통을 따른다. 그 전통에 따라 이 관점에서는 유색인종 하위주체(subaltern) 여성들의 분석적인 목소리들을 비중있게 다룬다. 이들이 다시 쓰는 미국 이야기는 미국의 공식서사에서 누락되고 생략된 것들을, 중심/주변 사이의 상호작용하는 역동적인 장들을 부상시키면서 포괄적인 의미에서의 미국이라는 국가적 서사를 다시 쓰고 있기 때문이다. 유색인종 하위주체 여성들의 서사들은 다른 성, 인종, 계급 주체들의 서사들과 다양하게 얽혀 있기 때문에 따로 논의될 게 아니라 서로 연결되어 비교되는 가운데 함께 논의되어야 한다.

영문 초록

In this era of globalization, 'the cultural' and the differences are homogenized and fragmented in the global market. The task of reading American culture in a new perspective starts from reflection on that reality and our subjecthood. In this article, the writer proposes to read American culture as contending narratives. American cultural narratives have been composed of Native America, African America, Chicano America, and Asian America as well as a white canonical America. In order to read these 'multiethnic' cultural narratives comprehensively, the writer presents 'cultural politics of commonness and difference' as a methodology of connecting and comparing diverse ethnic groups along the axes of race-sex-class. 'Critical Multiethnic Feminism' is suggested as a theoretical base. This base emphasizes the intersectionality of race-gender-systems and follows the political line of anti-racist anti-capitalist feminist activism. 'Critical Multiethnic Feminism' encourages us to deal with the analytical narratives of subaltern women of color more attentively because they rewrite the U.S. national narratives from a complex and multiple position such as outside-in or inside-out. Their narratives are also to be discussed while being connected and compared with those of other ethnic males and females.
