국문 초록

이 논문의 주요 목적은 인구구조의 변화가 경제성장에 미치는 효과를 분석하기 위한 것이다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해서 이른바 부분조정모형(partial adjustment model)을 사용하여 1993년에서 2003년 동안 세계 77개국의 1인당 국민소득 성장률을 1993년의 인구 구조와 1993년부터 2003년까지의 인구 구조 변화를 나타내는 변수를 포함한 일련의 설명변수들을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 절대적인 인구규모와 증가율은 1인당 국민소득의 증가율에 영향을 주지 못하지만 인구의 연령구조와 그 변화는 경제성장에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 구체적으로 생산가능인구(15세 - 64세)에 비하여 높은 유소년 인구(0-14세)와 고령인구(65세 이상) 비율은 ‘인구구조적 부담(demographic burden)’으로 작용하여 경제성장을 억제하며, 특히 전체인구에서 차지하는 고령인구비율의 상대적 증가는 유소년 인구비율의 상대적 증가에 비해서 경제성장에 미치는 부정적 효과가 상대적으로 더욱 큰 것으로 분석되었다. 이와 같은 결과는 한국을 비롯하여 세계 대부분의 국가들이 향후 수십 년 내에 고령인구 비율이 크게 증가할 것으로 전망됨을 감안할 때, 이에 따른 성장잠재력의 감소에 대비하는 정책이 매우 절실하다는 것을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of demographic transition on economic growth. To accomplish this purpose, using the so-called partial adjustment model, we estimates the per capita GDP growth rates of 77 countries between 1993 and 2003 against a host of independent variables including the variables indicating the demographic structure in 1993 and its changes between 1993 and 2003. The results show that the level and growth of the absolute size of the population neither restrict nor promote economic growth, but population age structure has influences on its economic performance. Specifically, a large size of the population of both children and the elderly relative to the working-age population constitutes a “demographic burden” and inhibits economic growth. But, an increasing relative size of the elderly in total population has a greater negative impact on economic growth than an increasing relative size of the population of children. The result is very alarming, as only in the next few decades will any society witness a surge in the numbers of the elderly.
