국문 초록

  이 연구는 기업의 공간적 집적이 생산성을 향상시키는가를 실증적으로 검정한다. 자료는 2003년 산업총조사에서 발표한 산업단지 입주기업에 대한 자료이다. 실증분석결과 공간적 집적은 기업의 생산성을 향상시키는 효과가 있다는 것이 확인되었다. 입지계수로 측정한 집적도가 10% 상승하면 생산성은 약 0.64% 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
  집적관련 이론모형에서 자주 언급되는 도시화 효과(urbanization economies)도 실제로 존재하는 것으로 확인되었다. 공단을 둘러싸고 있는 도시의 기업 총 수가 10% 증가하면 공단에 입지한 기업의 생산성은 약 0.52% 향상되는 것으로 추정되었다.
  이 연구는 산업별로 집적의 효과가 다르다는 것도 보여준다. 더미변수를 이용한 추정결과 화학산업이 집적의 효과를 가장 크게 보는 것으로 나타났다. 이어서 목재 및 목재관련 산업, 석유정제산업, 비철금속산업 등도 집적의 효과가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 향후 정책당국이 산산업클러스터를 조성할 때 어떤 산업을 우선적으로 집적화해야 할 것인지에 대한 판단 기준을 제공한다.

영문 초록

  This study uses Korean data to empirically examine if agglomeration of firms pays off. In this article, we have used aggregated firm data collected from Industrial Complex survey in 2003 Industrial Census. Our empirical results offer evidence that there exist productivity gains in the geographic agglomeration of firms. Geographically 10% higher concentration of firms is expected to increase production by 0.64% overall.
  Following discussions on the effect of urbanization economies in related literature, we also check if the urbanization effect occurs. Our estimation result confirms existence of the urbanization effect in Korea. It is estimated that 10% increase in total number of firms in whole city raises productivity of firms within the city by 0.52%.
  Our analysis also presents which industry would be the biggest beneficiary of the agglomeration. Our estimation shows that the industry of chemicals & chemical products will gain the most from co-location. Industries of woods & woods products, refined petroleum products, and non-metallic mineral products are also expected to generate mutually beneficial externalities.
