The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of marital satisfaction and couple"s cohesion mediated by child-rearing agreement on young children"s problem behaviors which was consisted of internalized and externalized behaviors.
The subjects of this study consisted 252 mothers who had 3 to 5 years old children. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach α, t-test, ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc test, and correlation using SPSS program. The theoretical model was separately tested according to school children"s gender using LISREL Ⅷ package.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, for boys and girls, parent"s marital satisfaction had a direct effect on parent"s child-rearing agreement and children"s internalized and externalized problem behavior, and an indirect effect on children"s internalized and externalized problem behavior through their child-rearing agreement. In other words, if parents were satisfied with their martial relation and had less conflicts, their attitude and sense of values to rearing children was closely united, so this reduced the internalized and externalized problem behavior of boys and girls. If couples were highly satisfied with their marriage life, they could have consistent attitude and sense of values to rearing children, so this reduced the internalized problem behavior of boys and girls.
Second, both of boys and girls had been affected for their internalized problem behavior directly by parent"s cohesion and child-rearing agreement of their parents. The couple"s cohesion through their child-rearing agreement had an indirect effect on the children"s internalized problem behavior. For boys, the couple"s cohesion of their parents had a direct effect on their externalized problem behavior, but for girls, the couple"s cohesion of their parents did not affect directly their externalized problem behavior.
Third, parent"s child-rearing agreement had a direct effect on both of boys and girl"s internalized problem behavior. However, it did not affect directly the externalized problem behavior of boys and girls.
