국문 초록

  범죄두려움은 우리 사회의 심각한 문제로 바람직한 사회의 정상적인 유지를 위해서는 그에 대한 대책마련이 필요하다. 따라서 이 연구에서는 범죄두려움의 발생요인으로 개인적 특성 이외에 지역특성에 초점을 둔다. 즉 지역사회내 유대 및 애착, 감시 및 감독, 지역활동에의 참여 등 비공식적 통제와 경찰활동인 공식적 통제가 범죄두려움에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 이 두 요인간의 상호작용효과를 통해 범죄두려움을 감소시키는 효과가 극대화될 수 있음을 검증하는데 연구목적을 두고 있다.
  분석결과, 먼저 성별과 연령이 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 지역의 무질서가 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 나타났으나, 부적 효과로 나타났다. 셋째, 비공식적 통제변수들은 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 순찰활동, 범죄예방활동, 경찰서비스활동 등이 범죄두려움에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 무질서와 범죄예방활동, 무질서와 경찰서비스활동 등의 상호작용효과가 나타났으며 여섯째, 비공식적 통제변수들과 각종 경찰활동의 상호작용 효과 중에서는 유대와 순찰활동, 유대와 범죄예방활동, 애착 및 신뢰와 경찰서비스활동, 감시 및 감독과 경찰서비스활동 등의 상호작용효과가 나타났다.
  분석결과에 따라 앞으로 범죄두려움을 감소시키기 위해서는 지역특성과 경찰활동의 상호작용효과를 고려하여 범죄예방책을 강구해야 할 것이다. 즉 일방적인 경찰활동에서 벗어나 지역특성을 고려한 맞춤형 경찰활동이 시도될 필요성이 있다. 그 기본전제로 지역주민의 협조 또한 무엇보다 중요하다고 본다. 따라서 경찰에서는 범죄문제를 해결하는 데 지역주민의 참여를 유도할 수 있는 방법을 고안하고, 이를 범죄예방책에 적극 활용해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

  Because the fear of crime is regarded as one of the most serious social problems, acounter measure is necessary to ensure the well-being of the community. The present study formsa research model with community characteristic and police activity as independent variables and fear of crime in experientially identified important factors in explaining fear of crime. Particularly, this study examines whether, in explaining crimes, the effect of community characteristics appears conditionally according to police activity. That is, it is not just informal social control that reduces fear of crime but it can be more effective when applied together with police activity.
  According to the results of the analysis, sex and age was observed to be related to fear of crime and the effect of disorder was observedto have a negative relationship. Informal social controls were not found to beinfluential on fear of crime, while all police activities appeared to be a factor affecting fear of crime. In other words, fear of crime was low where police activity was executed effectively.
  Results show that there is an effect of interaction between community characteristics and police activities, which is the main hypothesis of this study. First, there is an effect of interaction between disorder and crime prevention activities, and between disorder and police service activity. Second, it also existed between informal social controls and police activities, community tiesand patrol activity, and community ties and crime prevention activities. Effects of interaction between community attachment and police service activity, interactions between supervision and police service activity also existed.
  Based on the results presented above, we suggest measures to reduce fear of crime as follows. It will be more effective in reducing fear of crime to carry out police activities in consideration of community characteristics. In addition, various programs should be developed to prevent crimes through cooperation between the police and community residents. That is, anti crime measures should not only be taken through the introduction of programs for enhancing community ties or unity among the residents, but also crime prevention activities in cooperation with the police.
