조선족 여성의 몸일 경험과 여성성의 변화가능성 - 목욕관리사의 몸일(body work)을 통한 ‘여자 만들기’를 중심으로

국문 초록

  본 연구는 목욕관리사로 일하는 조선족여성의 여성성의 변화 가능성을 분석하고 있다. 이주를 통해 경계인으로서 자신의 조건에서 ‘돈을 벌기 위한’ 확고한 목표를 갖고 있는 연구참여자들은 자신이 하는 일들이 ‘천하기도’ 하지만 ‘쉽게’ 돈을 벌 수 있다는 기대에서 목욕관리사가 된다. 그러나 목욕관리사의 일은 그리 쉽지만은 않다. 기술, 경험, 인맥관리 뿐 아니라 한국여성에 적합한 비위 맞추기를 잘해야 한다. 연구참여자는 일시적이지만 ‘여성적 관계 맺기’라는 감정노동을 터득하고 실천하면서 한국사회의 여성을 배운다. 일의 경험이 축적될수록 ‘천한 일’이라는 몸일에 대한 평가는 ‘여성을 위한 아름다움을 만드는 일’로 변화하면서 연구참여자들 스스로 아름다워지기를 욕망한다.
  본 연구는 연구참여자들이 경제적 주체가 되면서 고향에서의 전통적인 여성 역할, 또는 규범에의 저항을 하며 이전과는 다른 ‘강한 여성’으로서의 실천적 행위와 기대를 갖는다는 점에서 긍정적이지만 여전히 이분법적인 성별을 재생산 한다는 지점에서 여성주의적으로 문제를 제기한다. 열심히 사는 것이 개인들의 생활과 조건을 변화시키며 삶의 지향과 미래에의 전망, 자기 인식을 변화시키는 동인이 되기도 하지만 한국사회의 여성성의 규범을 체현하기 때문이다. 특히 몸가꾸기를 강화하는 소비사회의 맥락에서 몸일이라는 일의 특성은 더욱 여성의 아름다움을 강화한다. 그럼에도 연구참여자들이 현재의 위치에서 몸일을 통한 감정의 복잡함을 스스로 또는 동료와의 관계에서 의논하고 해결하면서 한국여성과 거리두기를 하면서 협상과 저항을 하는 것은 여성성의 또 다른 변화의 가능성이다.

영문 초록

  This paper analyses the experiences and voices of Chinese Joseonjok ethnic women who "cross borders and temporarily work and make a living as bathing-care-givers" in the midst of the globalization era. Women"s migration leaving her familiar world for a new opportunity in a global age is connected to a social, political and economic system and process.
  Identity is a narrative telling herself and others who she is, or who she is not. A narrative of identity could be personal and communal; one often becomes a resource of the other. Femininity is identity as a woman and it is not defined as homogenious, stable, and absolute. It is flexible.
  In this context, Josenjok women try to view their future through advantageous compromises and resistance in the course of shifting back between Chinese and Korean societies. Structural relation to migration, racial identitites, nationality, conflict on traditional gender identity are contested for their identity and femininity
  The act of scrubbing and massaging as the emotional body work confuses the thinking between bathing-care-givers and beneficiary Korean women about health, beauty, pleasure, and care-giving. Thus, dirty work may be thought it as beautiful work to bargain their attitude, practice, etc. Contrary to what is thought to be women"s ideal role, belief and relationships, these body workers are making a new femininity. In turn, they must embody Korean women"s style, smile and preferences, so they can make money.
  As the result of contesting people, capital and cultural discourse of globalization, the individual"s identity is being restructured. It shows active behavior of an individual who chooses to migrate oneself under certain conditions of social structure and cultural background. However, as a feminist researcher, the new consumption behaviorism and its connection to fundamental feminine gender (beautifying oneself) require much deeper contemplation.
