국문 초록

  이 연구는 군대의 여성 참여나 참여의 요구가 늘어나는 현실 속에서 군대의 여성을 점검하기 위해 이루어졌다. 이를 위해 가장 적극적인 형태의 군사화로 남성 중심적 공간의 상징인 군대에서 가장 일찍부터 군대의 조직원으로서 함께 해온 간호장교의 정체성, 역할, 의식을 점검하려고 한다. 특히 국가주의가 발달한 한국사회에서 보다 국가와 직접적으로 관계를 맺는 간호장교들의 국가 의식과 이들의 성 역할과 의식과는 어떤 관련을 맺는지도 점검해보려 한다. 간호장교는 가장 남성 중심적이고 남성다움을 지향하는 조직인 군대에서 돌봄 노동이라는 여성에게 주로 기대되는 노동을 하는 여성 집단이다.
  여성과 군사화의 적극적 형태로서 분석해본 간호장교의 정체성, 여성성, 섹슈얼리티는 단순하지 않다. 남성 중심적인 공간에서 여성의 여성성이 끊임없이 의심되고 차별에 이용되며 여성들 간의 갈등 요소가 된다. 남성만을 위해 설계되고 운영되어왔을 뿐만 아니라 남성성 형성의 사회적 토대로 자리 잡은 공간에서 간호장교들은 자신의 성적 통제를 통해 남성의 공간에 있는 여성에 대한 의심을 막기 위해 여성성과 섹슈얼리티는 끊임없이 자체적으로 검열되고 조종되는 주요한 관심 대상이 된다. 이들이 중요하게 체득한 장교 의식을 통해서 성적 한계를 극복하고 동등한 대우를 받는 존재가 되려는 전략을 구사하기도 한다. 그러나 군대가 설정한 여성성에 대한 기대와 성별역할에 대한 고정관념은 전문직인 간호업무를 수행하는 간호장교의 역할을 주부와 같은 영역으로 변화시켜 군대의 주부화 현상이 나타나기도 한다.

영문 초록

  In this research, I want to explore the identities, roles and consciousness of military nurses in South Korea, to examine one aspect of women"s militarization in South Korea. Military nurses comprise a very interesting group of people in the subject of women"s militarization. They have been the oldest female members of the South Korean military, and most of them have had a homogeneous background because they have studied at the military academy made exclusively for military nurses, which is a military facility that exists only in South Korea. As they are military nurses as well as military officers, their identities, sexualities and roles are quite complicated. In the male centered institution, femininities become the reasons for distrust and discrimination from male colleagues, and conflicts among women. Military nurses develop very complicated self-censorship and manipulation over sexuality and femininity. For instance, courtship with soldiers is firmly discouraged and even forbidden. To be as respectable as male counterparts, the nurses emphasize that they are also military officers and try to develop the quality and attitude needed to be one of them. However, even though military nurses are very conscious of femininity and sexuality, their role acceptance is rather traditional and less equality oriented. Military nurses play all kinds of feminized caring roles in the military. Overall, they can be called ‘housewives of the military’. This implies that women’s militarization through being military officers and attending the military academy does not translate into the enhancement of women’s power and equality in the military.
  In addition, the women have a very strong collective sense of patriotism and state-centered nationalism, which produces a belief that any demand or any change for their own interests could go against those of the state or the military. The state becomes a new patriarch who provides a free education and job chance as a substitute for an old patriarch (father) who could not give any financial support for his own daughter’s advanced education. The state centered consciousness, which is very prevalent in any member of the military, helps military nurses develop less critical perspectives on gender blind women"s policies in the military and on gender discriminatory marriage practices. This shows how the way women relate to the state as well as to the military is a crucial factor, in thinking of women’s militarization.
