국문 초록

  최근 개인의 ‘몸’에 대한 사회적 관심이 높아지고 있으며 몸에 대한 연구주제가 학계의 새로운 화두로 떠오르고 있는 시점에서 아동의 자신의 몸에 대한 지각이 개인에게 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 6학년 450명을 대상으로 몸의 다양한 외적 형태의 중에서 뚱뚱함의 정도에 따라 아동의 자기 몸에 대한 지각이 스트레스를 유발하고 있는지와 자아존중감의 수준에 영향을 미치는지를 파악하고 이에 대한 교육적 함의를 논의하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 여자아동보다 남자아동이 더 비만한 경향을 보였지만, 자신의 몸이 뚱뚱하다고 지각하는데서 오는 스트레스는 오히려 여자 아동이 더 많은 것으로 나타나 사회적으로 외모에 대한 암묵적인 기대가 여자 아동에게 더 영향을 미치는 것으로 이해되었다. 아동은 실제적인 자기 몸의 상태보다는 사회문화적으로 이상화된 몸을 개념화하여 자기 신체를 부정적으로 지각하고 스트레스를 느끼는 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 이것이 아동의 자아존중감을 저하시키는 요인으로 나타났다. 교사들은 아동의 자기 몸에 대한 부정적인 지각이 긍정적인 정서 발달과 사회성, 학업성취를 저해하는 요인으로 작용함을 이해하고 아동에게 적절한 지도와 교육적 경험을 제공할 할 필요성이 강조되었다.

영문 초록

  This study is designed to understand The influence of obesity and obesity-stress on self-esteem of children, Four-hundred fifty students at the 6th grade in Kwangyang area were selected for the study. Among them, 150 students are obese, another 150 are over-weight, and the others are normal-weight. In order to collect the data, "Obesity stress measurement questionaries" and Self-esteem measurement inventory" are used.
  The result of the study is as follows. First, it appears that girls tend to get more obesity-stress than boys do whereas there are more boys in number than girls who belong to a group of obesity. However, there is no statistically significant difference between boys and girls in the obesity-stress resulting from their efforts to overcome the obesity.
  Secondly, it is found that the degree of obesity of children is an influential factor to elicit the obesity-stress, and the obesity-stress is also an influential to the level of self-esteem of them. It is concluded that psychological development of children has to be considered in relation to their body as social construct. It is suggested that teachers need to consider their children cognitive development related with children"s emotional state and perceptions of their body in order to manage children"s successful school life including academic achievement, positive mind, and peer relations of children.
