The author of this paper would like to make a contribution to the performance improvement of ice hockey players through examining the mental strength, among the several psychological factors affecting their performances, understanding exactly their strong and weak points, and applying the mental training programs.
The subject of the examination were all of the 322 players from 16 teams registered at Korea Ice Hockey Association, which were 124 players from 8 high schools, 122 players from 5 universities, and 76 players from professional teams.
The Loehr test was used in the examination of mental strength of the ice hockey players, while the existing program of SPSS/PC+ was employed and the relationship among the teams were checked, through the ex-post facto verification after linear arrangement and dispersion analysis, in the analysis by the individual player of ice hockey teams or by the group of high school, university, or professional teams.
The conclusions of the study are as follows: The mental strength in general of ice hockey players indicated the highest level in motivation at 22.83, followed by the relatively high level in visualization and imagery adjustment at 21.92, positive energy at 21.65, attitude adjustment at 21.33, and self-confidence at 20.21.
Moreover, the levels in stimulation adjustment at 17.73 and attention adjustment at 17.51 were almost similar and very low.
The levels by mental training technique and selected team are as follows:
1) Self-confidence was 20.21±3.67 on the average of the players, which was a signigicant level(F=3.648, P<.05). The Dongwon professional team was the highest at 22.07, while the Hwimun High School team was the lowest at 17.07.
2) Arousal Control was 17.73±3.52 on the average of the players, which was a significant level(F=3.059, P<.05). The Hyundai professional team was the highest at 19.81, while the Hwimun High School team was the lowest at 15.20.
3) Attention Control was 17.51±2.89 on the average of the players, which was a significant level(F=2.487, P<.05). The Hyundai professional team was the highest at 19.38, while the Seorabeol High School team was the lowest at 15.85.
4) Visualization and imagery Control was 21.92±3.85 on the average of the players, which was a significant level(F=2.533, P<.05). The Hwimun High School team was the highest at 23.67, while The Hanyang University team was the lowest at 19.50.
5) Motivation was 22.83±3.82 on the average of the players, which was significant(F=2.757, P<.05). The Kyungbok High School team was the highest at 24.94, while Kyunggi High School team was the lowest at 20.58.
6) Positive energy was 21.65±3.34 on the average of the players, which was not a significant level(F=1.484, P<.05). The Dongwon professional team was the highest at 23.14, while the Kwangwoon University team was the lowest at 20.19.
7) Attitude Control was 21.33±3.00 on the average of the players, which was a significant level(F=1.787, P<.05). The Yonsei University team was the highest at 22.83, while the Hanyang University team was the lowest at 19.42.
