The purpose of the present study is to examine the impact of information technology on women's work in Korea. In doing so, the following questions were raised: 1) How does the information technology inflruence employment opportunities for women? Does the use of information technology at the workplace increase or decrease women's employment? 2) What are the characteristics and conditions of women's work in the office changed with the office automation? 3) How does this change influence on gender division of labor and inequality in the labor market? The data were obtained by a survey using questionnaires from 602 women workers in banking industries, and were supplemented by in depth interviews with bank tellers, managers and labor union officials. Main discussions of the study can be summarized as follows: First, in Korea women's employment has risen rapidly during the last three decades, and certain occupations have become increasingly staffed by females. Looking at women's employment by occupation, the concentration and representation of women is clearly shown. Women occupy only 3.3% of administrative and managerial jobs, while occupying 60.8% of service jobs and 47.2% of sales jobs in 1987. The share of female workers in clerical areas has risen faster than in other occupational groups(17.0% in 1970 and 36.9% in 1987). This tendency is likely to continue as the use of information technology becomes widespread in the workplace. Second, the degree of gender segregation becomes evident in the clerical occupations. One finds women workers overwhelmingly concentrated in a few "female" occupations, that are relatively less-skilled and lower-paid. This concentration makes them particularly vulnerable to the new wave of technological change which is directed largely at the rationalization of the more routine clerical jobs. Many of the computerized jobs - i.e.secretaries, bookkeepers, typists, bank tellers and so on - at the clerical level are held primarily by women. Third, women's wage still remain low relative to men's in clerical occupations. Moreover, the wage differentials appear the greatest in traditionally female jobs, such as stenography and typing, and the lowest one goes for supervising clerical workers. This suggests that the lower in the occupational hierarchy, the greater becomes wage differentials. Thus, as more women enter the labor market, horizontal gender segregation will be maintained or will deepen in the future. This argument is based on women's status today and is a realistic expectation. Fourth, the impact of information technology on the quality of work becomes an important issue in labor process analysis. Previous studies have argued that, with computerized banking, teller's work has changed into a form of routine and repetitious labor, and therefore, their work has been not only intesified and but de-skilling of clerical jobs. Bank tellers have insisted that their work required overall knowledge about banking business and more knowledge and skills than before, although their work look to be simple and repetitious. It is too early to draw any definite conclusion about whether teller's work is degraded or de-skilled, because the effects of technology on the work process vary by the level of automation, the kinds of technology being introduced, and the the nature of the work process being automated. Finally, women workers in banking industries have complained about sex discriminations at the workplace in terms of wages, promotions and job placements. Respondent reported that their work was not sustantially different from what male workers in the same grade did. However, employers and male collegues tend to consider women's work to be routine, repetitious and less-skilled, and thus consider women workers to be replacable by anybody at anytime. This suggests that "feminized" clerical jobs have been degraded not because of the technological content of the work but because they are being carr
