성별ㆍ지역별 특성에 따른 노인의 삶의 만족도 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 노인인구의 증가와 더불어 노인인구 내 여성노인 비율의 증가에 따라, 노인 연구에서 서로 다른 생애과정(life course)을 살아 온 남녀 노인의 삶의 조건의 차이를 반영해야 할 필요성이 있음을 노년기 삶의 만족도의 성별 차이 연구를 통해 밝혀보고자 한다. 조사대상 노인은 서울과 춘천지역 남녀 노인 1,767명으로, 노인의 삶의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 성별, 지역별로 모형을 구분하여 중다회귀분석하였다. 노인의 삶의 만족도의 성별 차이를 보면, 춘천과 서울지역 모두에서 여성노인의 삶의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인들은 남성노인에 비해 상대적으로 간단명료함을 알 수 있다. 건강상태, 의료시설 접근도, 주관적 계층귀속감이 여성노인의 삶의 만족도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 공통 요인이며, 춘천 여성노인의 경우 복지시설에의 접근도가, 서울 여성노인의 경우에는 교육수준이 삶의 만족도에 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면 남성노인의 경우에는 건강상태와 의료시설 접근도와 배우자 유무, 자식과의 전화연락 빈도 등 가족관계 변인들과 친구나 이웃과의 관계가 만족도에 중요한 영향을 미치고 있었다. 일반적으로 여성 노인이 남편과 자식에게 경제적ㆍ심리적으로 의존적이고 관계중심적인 존재라는 인식과 달리, 오히려 남성 노인이 가족이나 이웃과의 관계에 따라서 삶의 만족에 영향을 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 여성노인이 남성노인에 비해 가장 기초적인 건강과 경제적인 조건에서 더 불안정한 현실을 반영하며, 노인복지정책의 내용과 수혜 단위의 선정에 있어서 남녀 노인의 조건의 차이를 고려해야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This research tries to understand the gender differences among the elderly. Elderly people have experienced different life courses according to their gender. Life experiences and conditions between the two genders have had significant effects on the life satisfaction of elderly people. Sampling research has been conducted on a total of 1,767 elderly people living in Seoul (a large city) and Chuncheon (a medium sized city). Based on our research data, multiple regression analysis on two areas was tried withvariables that affect life satisfaction. According to our results, meaningful factors influencing the life satisfaction of elderly females were relatively simple when compared with elderly males. Health condition, proximity to health related institutions,and subjective class affiliation were found to be positively affecting the life satisfaction of the female elderly. In the case of Chuncheon elderly females, proximity to welfare institutions was important, however among Seoul elderly females, educationallevel was important. In contrast health condition, proximity to health related institutions, existence of their spouses, frequency of telephone calls with their children, and relations with their friends and neighbors were important among the male elderly. This finding is significantly different from common thought that elderly females are economically and psychologically dependent on their spouses and children. On the contrary, elderly males were found to be more dependent on their families and neighbors.This suggests that elderly females are situated in a more difficult situation in order to secure their basic health and economic conditions. We may need gender sensitive policy measures in order to implement an effective welfare system for the elderly.
