가정학이라는 근대적 지식의 획득 : 일제 하 여자일본유학생을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 식민지 시기 조선 여성이 일본의 여자고등교육기관에 유학하여 어떠한 근대적 지식을 획득했는가를 가정학을 중심으로 분석한다. 먼저 3인의 일본인 가정학자의 성역할에 관한 인식과 가정학에 관한 생각 등을 검토하여, 당시 일본의 가정학이란 주부 어머니라는 여성의 가정내 역할을 확립시키기 위해, 나아가서는 그 역할과 충돌하지 않는 범위 내에서 여성의 역할을 사회로 확대시키기 위해, 여성들이 중심이 되어 구축해 간 지식이었음을 밝힌다. 다음으로, 미국인 가정학자에 의해 가정학이 동아시아에 보급된 역사적 실례를 분석하여, 조선인 여자유학생이 일본에서 배운 가적학은 세계적 규모로 통일되어 간 여성들의 지식이었음을 논의한다. 마지막으로, 가정학을 배운 여자유학생이 귀국 후에 조선 사회에서 어떠한 역할을 했는지를 고찰한다. 그들은 일본 유학을 통해 지식과 자격을 획득하여 '여성의 영역'의 전문가(특히 가사과교원)로서 조선 사회에 등장하였고, 그러한 사회적 역할로 인해 급기야 일제 말기 식민지 권력이 이용하려는 인재가 되어, 권력측에 흡수되어 갔음을 고찰한다.

영문 초록

This article examines the kind of modern knowledge Korean women students acquired at Japanese women's higher education institutions during the Colonial Period. It analyzes Home Economics, the emerging science that articulated a new gender role for women. First, the author traces the role of three Japanese scholars in promoting Home Economics as a field of study to establish women's role as wife/mother within the household, and to expand their participation in the society as long as it did not conflict with their household responsibilities. Second, through examining the case of Ava B. Milam (1884-1976), the author traces the manner in which Home Economics spread from the United States of America to East Asia, and shows that Korean women students were learning a science for women that was then being standardized on a worldwide scale. Lastly, the author examines the role that Korean women students who had studied Home Economics in Japan played in Korean society after they returned. Particular note is given to the fact that as specialists on the home, many of these women eventually were coopted by the colonial power, which wanted to improve the Korean home by making it more closely resemble the Japanese model.
