국문 초록

본 연구는 (ⅰ) 대부분의 연금은 과대적립(overfunded) 되어 있으나 그 정도가 미미하고, (ⅱ) 일반적으로 연금급부의 산정은 근무년수와(최종연도) 임금에 의존한다는 확정급부형연금(defined benefit pension funds)에 관찰되고 있는 두 가지 현실적 사실을 이론적으로 설명하고 있다. 본 연구는 "협조가설" 이라는 이론을 제시함으로써 이러한 현실적으로 관찰되는 사실에 대한 경제학적인 근거를 제시하고 있다. 과대적립(overfunding)은 기업인 근로자들과의 관계에 있어서 효율성을 증진시키는데에 매우 유효한 방법이라는 것이 내용의 골자이다. 이러한 작업이 유효하게 되기 위해서는 근로자들이 이탈행위를 할 유인을 제거해야 하는데, 이를 위해서는 연금급부의 산정이 근로자들의 근무노력(effort)에 의존해야 한다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 극단적인 연금적립이 최적이라고 주장하는 기존의 이론들은 근로자들의 근무노력이 모형에서 외생적으로 결정되는 경우에 사실인 것으로 밝혀지고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper presents a theoretical model that explains two real-world observations on defined benefit pension funds that is, (ⅰ) most pension plans are overfunded, but not by much, and (ⅱ) commonly used pension benefit formulas base their calculation on years of service and/or (final) wage. This study comes up with the "cooperation hypothesis" to provide an economic rationale for these two observations. The argument is that overfunding is a way that the firm can commit itself to efficiency-enhancing cooperation with workers. Also, for this arrangement to be viable, any incentive for defection has to be stripped of workers. This can be done by basing the pension benefit formula on the worker's effort. Furthermore, this paper finds out that the standard theory claiming extreme patterns of pension funding to be the optimal strategy can only remain valid in the present study when the workers' effort is exogenously given to the model.
