국문 초록

영호남과 함께 삼남을 구성하는 호서지방은 조선시대의 출발을 전후한 시기에 오늘날의 지리적 기틀이 다져지고 일제시대를 거치면서 일련의 변화를 겪게된다. 환경, 행정, 인구, 경제, 교통 등 제 부문의 역사 지리적 파노라마는 지역 정체성 형성에 적지 않은 영향을 끼쳤다. 금강, 남한강, 삽교천의 하천유역은 호서 지방의 일상생활권을 규정하였으며, 수로자체는 문화전파의 회랑으로 작용하였다. 지역생활은 지속적으로 늘어나는 인구와 지역 내 부존자원을 이용한 산업활동의 영향을 받으며 전개되었다. 특히 상업발달은 준 폐쇄적인 자급경제를 자본제적 교환경제 체제로 유도하는 기폭제가 되었다. 사회경제적인 발달은 취락체계의 변동으로 이어졌다. 도회와 일반 촌락으로 구성된 취락은 전통 교통로에 의해 분포와 계층적 패턴이 결정되었으며, 일제시대 신작로의 정비 및 철도교통의 도래와 함께 대대적인 재조정 과정을 거친다. 충청도의 지역지리는 이러한 역동적인 변화의 메커니즘에 기초하여 형성·발달되었다.

영문 초록

The nascent configuration of the Hosea vernacular region was shaped around the turn of the political regimes from Koryo to Chosun Korea. The region then embraced a dramatic transformation under Japanese colonial rule. The historical geographical panorama having evolved from the 15th to the early 20th centuries in the whole vista of environment. administration. population, economy and transportation laid a determining effect upon the shaping of regional identity The river valleys of Keum, Namhan, Sapkyo and Ansung determined the bound of multiple realms of daily life. Then the everyday life was modulated by the implosion of population growth and the explosion of regional economies. Elaboration of commodity exchanges, in particular, helped the Hosea region to direct away from the autarky toward the capitalist way of life. The distribution and hierarchical systems of towns and villages generated by the guide of overland routes, inland waterways and sea lanes were embroiled, with the advent of railroads and inter-regional artery, into the maelstrom of restructuring. The multi- layer foundation of today’s regional geography of Choongchung province had been solidified during this four and a half some centuries.
