사교육이 학업성취에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 우리나라의 교육현상의 일부분으로 자리 잡고 있는 사교육의 효과를 탐색하고, 특히 여러 가지 사교육 형태 중 효과적인 사교육의 형태를 밝히고자 한다. 학생의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 학생수준 및 지역수준의 변인을 알아보기 위해 경기도 내 초·중·고등학생 3,619명을 대상으로 실시한 설문 자료와 경기개발연구원에서 발간한 '알기 쉬운 경기도 경제지표' 자료를 분석하였다. 수집된 자료는 위계적 선형모형(Hierarchical Linear Modeling)을 이용해 분석하였으며 연구의 분석결과를 요약 ·논하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 학생들의 학업성취와 관련한 분산 중 지역수준의 분산은 의미 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 이는 학생의 사교육이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향은 지역에 따라 차이를 나타낸다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 학생수준의 변인 중 사회경제적 지위와 사교육 의존도, 그리고 학습지 구독여부가 학업성취에 영향을 가져오는 요인이었다. 본 연구에서 여러가지 사교육 활동 중 학습지 구독만이 학생의 학업성취에 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀진 것은 주목할 만하다. 그리고 학생 사교육 의존도가 높을수록 학업성취도는 높은 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 학생의 심적 상태가 사교육 효과의 결정적인 변인이 될 수 있음을 보여 준다. 본 연구결과에 터하여 다음과 같이 정책적 제언을 제시할 수 있다. 첫째 학생의 사교에 대한 의존도와 선호도 등 심적 상태가 사교육과 밀접한 관련 있는 연구결과로 미루어 중장기적으로 사교육 경감대책은 사교육에 대한 의존도를 약화시키는 전략에 집중되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 둘째, 사교육비 경감대책은 지금까지의 전국적 단위의 접근법에서 탈피하여 사교육비의 평균 규모는 작지만 지역주민의 학원수강 둥 사교육에 의한 의존도 높은 특정 지역을 사교육 경감 시범지역으로 선정하여 지역주민에 대한 사교육에 심리적 의존과 선호도를 개선해나가는 방식을 취해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study explored what private education activities improved student learning in Korea. Research team conducted questionnaire survey of 3,619 primary, middle and high school students in Kyonggi Province to investigate private learning activities in and after school. Student-level and local-level information were collected, and analyzed with Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Major results of the study are presented as below. First, the local-level variables have significant effects on student learning. It implies that the effects of private learning activities on student learning vary depending on geographical location. Secondly, among the student-level variables, parents' socio-economic status, students' dependance on private learning activities, and subscription to 'hak seup ji' (daily delivered learning aid materials) have significant effects on student achievement. It is notable that only 'hak seup ji' subscription has significant effect on learning among various private education activities. It implies that student learning is not determined merely by private education cost per person. The results of this study provide several implications to recent measures by education authorities to reduce private burden, and cost, of private learning activities. First, measures to reduce private learning cost should be concentrated on strategies to reduce dependance of students on private learning activities. Often, parents and students have psychological dependance on private learning activities such as private tutoring without really knowing about their impact on student achievement. Second, measures to reduce private learning cost need to turn away from national to local approach. Studies and assessment of effects of private learning activities need to focus on local samples of data and take into account local differences in student achievement. Many follow-up studies to acquire empirical evidence on student learning effects of private learning activities need to be conducted.
