해방 후 혼수문화의 변천에 대한 사례연구 : 부거제 의식과 가족주의의 지속

국문 초록

이 연구는 해방 이후부터 오늘날까지 혼례의 물질적 측면인 혼수의 변화를 다루고 있다, 특히 신혼주거, 신랑 측의 납폐, 신랑 친족에게 주는 신부 예단을 중심으로 논의를 진행시키고 있다. 사례조사를 실시했으며 인터뷰 대상은 지난 오십 년간 혼례를 치룬 여성 36명이다. 인터뷰는 2003년 12월부터 2004년 2월까지 행해졌고 2005년 9월부터 11월까지 추가 인터뷰가 행해졌다. 주요 쟁점은 예단의 증가 현상에 관해서이다. 지난 오십년간 혼수의 증가현상은 신랑 측, 신부 측 모두에 해당된다. 신거제의 보급으로 인해 신랑 측의 신혼주거 마련 비용이 급격히 증가했으며 이는 다시 예단의 증가를 가져왔다. 여기에는 신혼주거 제공은 신랑 측의 의무라고 하는 전통적인 부 거제 의식이 여전히 강력하게 작용하고 있다. 근래 들어 예단이 금전화 되면서 양측의 상호교환적 계산은 더욱 분명해지고 있으며, 예단비의 일부가 신부 측으로 되돌려오는 관행 또한 분명해졌다. 따라서 이 연구는 예단관행에 이해가 여성주의적 시각만으로는 충분히 못함을 강조하고 있다. 이 연구는 혼수의 증가가 자녀의 혼례를 부모의 책임으로 간주하는 전통적 가족주의의 지속과도 깊은 관련이 있음을 또한 강조하고 있다. 급격한 경제성장, 전통적인 의존적 부모자녀관계, 가부장적 관념의 뿌리 등이 물질주의 의식의 증대와 함께 어우러져 오늘날 혼수의 모습을 만들었음을 보여주고 있다. 따라서 사회적 이슈로 부각되는 혼수와 그 중에서도 특히 예단의 문제는 부모자녀관계, 즉 성인 자녀가 부모에게 기대고 그것을 당연하게 생각하는 의존주의가 근본적으로 바뀌지 않는 한 결코 쉽게 사라지지 않을 것임을 지적하고 있다. 이제 신혼부부가 저렴한 가격에 주거지를 마련할 수 있는 정부의 정책적 배려가 시급하다 하겠다.

영문 초록

This study tries to explore changing aspects of 'honsu' (marriage expenses) since the time of emancipation in Korean Society: 'honsu' is here defined as expenses　born by both families of bridegroom and bride. Thirty-six women who were married for the past 50 years were interviewed to elicit the information on the 'honsu' with particular attention to the 'yaedan' (gifts presented by the bride side to the bridegroom side), 'nappae' (gifts to the bride herself by the bridegroom side), and the preparation of the housing for the newly-wed. The key question is as follows: why has the 'yaedan' which was only symbolic and simple in previous eras continued to increase and spread among all the classes? Results of the present study largely support the findings of previous studies on the issue in that marriage expenses have increased together with the high economic growth in Korean society during the past several decades. But it should be noted here that the increase of the 'honsu' is pertinent not only for the bride family but for the bridegroom family as well. It is the finding of the present study that the amount of expenses born by the bride family tends to be determined by that born by the bridegroom family, the expense for a new dwelling, in particular. The trend toward the establishment of the neolocal dwelling since the 1960s which has put a big financial burden on the bridegroom family due to the deep-rooted traditional patrilocal ideology(meaning that providing a new dwelling is the responsibility of the bridegroom' side) is most responsible for the dramatic rise of the 'honsu' of the bridegroom's side, which has in turn contributed to the rise of 'yaedan'; for 'yaedan' is basically the bride family' s compensation for the socio-economic conditions provided by the bridegroom's family. It is another conviction in this paper that issues surrounding honsu' are the direct consequency of the traditional familism in which manying off the child is considered as one of the important duties of parents. Most of the cases in this study show that a greater portion of marriage expenses including a new dwelling was paid by the parents of th bridegroom for which the bride's family felt obligated to recompense by means of 'yaedan' , which has taken the form of cash in recent years. It is hard at this moment to anticipate the 'yaedan' to disappear unless the interdependent ideology of the parent-child relationship weakens. It is the time for the government to issue a new policy in which newly-weds are provided with an affordable housing.
