국문 초록

본 연구에서는 미주 한인의 민족교육관을 분석하였다. 미주 한인사회에서 학부모들은 주로 자녀들의 민족의식을 고취하기 위하여 그들을 한글학교에 보내지만, 자녀들은 단순히 실제적 목적에서 한국어를 습득하기 위해 한글학교에 다니는 경향이 있었다. 대체로 자녀들은 학부모들에 비해 민족의식 또는 민족정체성의 중요성에 대한 인식이나 민족교육의 실태에 대한 문제의식이 상대적으로 약했다. 미주 한인 차세대의 민족의식을 함양하기 위해서는 학부모와 자녀 모두 지대한 관심을 표명하고 있는 한국 방문 기회의 확대가 우선적으로 고려될 필요가 있는 것으로 생각된다. 한편 미주 한인 학부모의 자녀에 대한 태도에는 다소의 이중성이 내재되어 있는 것으로 판단된다. 그리하여 학부모들은 자녀들이 한국어와 현지어에 모두 능통하게 되기를 바라고 있었다. 또한 모국에 대해 상당히 비판적인 시각을 자주 드러내면서도 자녀들이 자신의 뿌리를 잊지 말기를 기대하는 경향이 드러났다.

영문 초록

This study attempts to elucidate the Korean-Americans' views on ethnic education for Koreans in the United States. It has found that the Korean parents send their children to Korean language schools in order to make them understand their ethnic background, whereas their children tend to attend the schools simply to learn Korean language for practical purposes. By and large, these Korean youngsters pay less attention to the importance of their ethnic background or ethnic identity and are less critical about the current state of ethnic education than their parents. A top priority should be given to providing more opportunities for young Korean-Americans to visit Korea to raise awareness about their roots, as agreed upon by parents and children. In the meantime, Korean parents appear to take ambivalent attitude toward their children. For example, when it comes to language education, they want their children to be a fluent speaker of both English and Korean. When grown up, parents want their children to be a member of the mainstream American society, on the one hand. On the other hand, however, they are afraid that their children assimilate into the American society too much and forget their roots.
