학급에서의 다수결의 원칙에 대한 유아의 경험 및 생각

국문 초록

본 연구는 유아들이 학급 내에서 다수결의 원칙을 경험하는 상황은 무엇인지, 다수결의 원칙에 대해 어떤 생각을 갖고 있는지를 알아보는 데 목적이 있었다. 본 연구의 참여자는 서울의 한 유치원에 재원 중인 유아 34명(4세 학급 유아 12명, 5세 학급 유아 22명)과 유아들의 담임교사 4명이었다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 참여관찰과 유아 대상의 소집단면담과개별면담을 수행하였다. 유아들이 학급에서 다수결의 원칙을 경험하는 상황은 교사가 일과 운영 시 유아의 의사를 반영하는상황, 여러 가지 의견 중 한 가지를 채택해야 하는 상황인 것으로 나타났다. 유아들은 다수결의 원칙을 다수의 의견을 반영할 수 있는 방법이면서 소수의견이 존재하는 방법, 학급에서 자주 경험하여 익숙한 방법, 손쉬운 의사결정 방법으로 인식하고 있었다. 본 연구는 유아기 의사결정 방법에 대한 기초 연구로, 유아기 민주시민교육의 일환으로 학급에서 빈번하게 사용되는 의사결정 방법인 다수결의 원칙에 대한 유아의 생각을 드러내었다는 의의가 있다. 또한 본 연구의 결과는 유아가 학급내에서 각 사안에 적합한 다양한 의사결정 방법을 경험하는 것을 통해 유능한 민주시민으로 성장할 수 있도록 유아기 사회교육이 이루어져야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to find out when young children experience majority rule in their classrooms and what they think about it. The participants were 34 young children (12 in the 4-year-old class and 22 in the 5-year-old class) enrolled in a kindergarten in Seoul and their 4 classroom teachers. Participant observation and small-group interviews and individual interviews with young children were conducted. It was found the young children experienced the majority rule when the teachers refllected their views in daily routines, and also when they had to choose one of several opinions. The children perceived majority rule as a way to accept the majority opinion and existing minority opinion together, also as a way to be familiar with the classroom, and finally an easy way to make decisions. This study is a basic study on early childhood decision-making, which reveals young children’s thoughts about majority rule, which is often used in the classroom as part of early childhood democratic citizenship education. The results of the study suggest that early childhood social studies education should be provided in such a way that young children can grow up to be competent democratic citizens through the experience of various decision-making methods.
