필립 글래스의 오페라 <사티아그라하>에 나타난 비폭력 저항운동과 작곡기법 연구

국문 초록

필립 글래스는 인도 독립의 아버지 마하트마 간디가 주창하고 추진한 비폭력 저항운동인 ‘사티아그라하(Satyagraha)’를 접하고 관심을 갖게 되면서, 남아프리카에서 인도인의 권리와 자유를 되찾기 위해 간디가 펼친 행적을 다룬 오페라 <사티아그라하>를 작곡하였다. 본 연구는 아직 국내에서 연구되지 않은 오페라 <사티아그라하>를 소개하면서 이 작품이 갖는 중요한 특징인 간디의 비폭력 저항운동에 관한 내용과 작품에 사용된 주요 작곡기법을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 먼저 간디의 생애 및 사티아그라하의 어원과 의미, 비폭력 저항운동의 사상적 배경을 살펴보고, 오페라 <사티아그라하>를 작곡한 글래스의 프로필과 음악 세계를 탐색한 후 오페라의 제작배경과 개요를 설명하였다. 연구결과, 오페라 <사티아그라하>에서 인도인의 권익 보호와 연관된 몇 개의 사건들을 중심으로 한 시놉시스, 사티아그라하의 과거, 현재 미래를 표상하는 각 막의 역사적 인물들, 힌두 경전 바가바드 기타에서 추출된 가사, 사티아그라하를 실천하는 군중의 모습으로 나타나는 합창단을 통해 비폭력 저항운동 관련 내용이 표현된 것을 발견하였다. 작품에 사용된 주요 작곡기법은 부가기법과 순환구조를 특징으로 하는 미니멀리즘, 반복되는 화성 패턴을 바탕으로 리듬적, 선율적, 화성적 변주가 나타나는 샤콘느 기법 그리고 장음계, 단음계, 반음계, 모드 등의 다양한 음계의 사용이었음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 오페라 <사티아그라하>에 대한 폭넓은 이해가 확산되고, 다양한 관점의 후속 연구가 양산되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Philip Glass composed the opera which deals with Gandhi's actions to regain the rights and freedom of Indians in South Africa, as he encountered and became interested in Satyagraha, a nonviolent resistance movement advocated and promoted by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian independence. The purpose of this study is to introduce the opera which has not yet been studied in Korea and to examine the content about nonviolent resistance movement by Gandhi which is an important feature of this work and the main composition techniques used in this work. To this end, I first examined life of Gandhi, the etymology and meaning of Satyagraha and the ideological background of the nonviolent resistance movement, explored the profile of Glass who composed the opera and his world of music and then explained the production background and outline of the opera. As a result of the study, it was found that the opera expressed content related to the nonviolent resistance movement through synopsis focusing on several events related to the protection for the Indian’s rights and interests, historical figures of each act representing the past, present, and future of Satyagraha, lyrics extracted from the Hindu scripture ‘Bhagavad Gita’ and a choir appearing as a crowd practicing Satyagraha. The main composition techniques used in the work were minimalism characterized by additive process and circulatory structure, the chaconne technique in which rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic variations appear based on repeated harmonic patterns and the use of various scales such as major, minor and chromatic scales and modes. It is hoped that through this study, a broader understanding of the opera will spread and follow-up research from various perspectives will be produced.
