국제결혼가정 출신 외국인 유학생의 다문화 정체성 발달에 관한 경험연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 다양한 문화적 배경의 국제결혼가정에서 성장한 외국인 유학생들의 다문화 정체성은 무엇이며 그 정체성 발달 과정은 어떠한지 질적 연구방법을 통해 탐색해 보고자 하였다. 이에 6명의 외국인 유학생들을 대상으로 개별 심층면접을 실시하여 자료를 수집·분석한 결과, 이들의 정체성 발달은 “주어진(Given) 다문화 정체성, 선택된(chosen) 다문화 정체성, 글로벌(global) 다문화 정체성”의 세 단계를 거치며, Banks의 다문화정체성 발달 6단계에서 보여주는 “글로벌 시민 정체성”을 갖고 있음이 발견되었다. 이들은 어린 시절 다문화적 가정환경에서 자라며 다문화를 자연스럽게 받아들이고 경험하였으나 청소년기 학교와 사회에서 외모, 인종, 종교 등으로 인한 사람들의 편견과 차별을 스스로 극복해야만 하였다. 이들의 부모와 가정과 교회의 다문화적 환경은 이들의 다문화 정체성 형성과 발달에 토대가 되었으며, 궁극적으로 글로벌 다문화 정체성을 발달시킴으로 미래 자신의 진로는 초국가적인 인류애를 실천하고자 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 다문화가정 부모와 자녀를 비롯하여 모두를 위한 다문화교육이 고려 할 사항 등을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to discover and understand how foreign college students who come from international marriage families develop their multicultural identities. By using the qualitative research methodology, six foreign college students were interviewed. The major findings from their stories were organized into ten main themes under three categories including given-, chosen-, and globalmulticultural identities. Their multicultural identities were formed and strongly influenced by their parents and church during childhood. They strengthened their multicultural identity by overcoming the challenges or discrimination they faced at school and the greater society. They finally developed global mindsets and perspectives over their chosen multicultural identity. They planned their future careers and personal goals, which are to work for humankind and world peace as global citizens matched with the characteristics of the sixth stage of cultural identity development suggested by Banks(2006). Based on these findings, their multicultural identity given from their family and church became a foundation helping them to chose and achieve their global multicultural identity. It is ‘becoming’ rather than ‘being’. Thus, this study brings some suggestions related to multicultural families and children, and roles of multicultural education in Korea.
