시대에 따른 스트릿댄스의 개념과 범주 변화

국문 초록

본 연구는 시대에 따른 스트릿댄스 개념과 범주의 변화를 고찰하였다. 스트릿댄스 범주 내 가장 역사가 깊고 오래되었다고 여겨지는 락킹(Locking)이 시작된 1960년으로부터 약 70년 정도가 흐른 지금 그리고 앞으로 스트릿댄스가 발레와 같이 진화되고 향유되어 모두에게 그 가치를 인정받기 위해서는 문화와 상업적 소비와 더불어 학문적 고찰과 그로 인해 발생하게 되는 가치의 재생산형성되는 문화의 공간이라는 상징적 의미를 지니고 있으며 이를 바탕으로 초창기의 스트릿댄스의 개념이 형성되었다. 스트릿댄스가 발생하던 시기 그 문화를 형성하던 이들이 향유하던 음악, 패션, 언어 그리고 사회적 배경 등이 복합적으로 상호작용하여 새로운 하위문화를 형성하게 이 반드시 공존해야 할 필요성이 있으므로 이와 같은 연구를 진행하게 되었다. 선행연구, 관련 전문인 인터뷰 등을 바탕으로 문헌연구를 진행하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 스트릿댄스에 사용된 단어 스트릿은 단순히 길거리가 아닌 비형식적으로 자유로이 형성되는 문화의 공간이라는 상징적 의미를 지니고 있으며 이를 바탕으로 초창기의 스트릿댄스의 개념이 형성되었다. 스트릿 댄스가 발생하던 시기 그 문화를 형성하던 이들이 향유하던 음악, 패션, 언어 그리고 사회적 배경 등이 복합적으로 상호작용하여 새로운 하위문화를 형성하게 된 것이다. 그리고 힙합음악과 문화가 발생하기 이전까지 당시의 스트릿댄스인 팝핑, 락킹, 왁킹이 그 범주에 속해져 있었다. 이후 디제잉에 의해 발생된 브레이크비트와 그에 추어지던 기성의 스트릿댄스 그리고 현재의 비보잉이 함께 브레이크댄스라는 명칭으로 매체를 통해 알려지게 되었다. 얼마 지나지 않아 힙합음악이 발생하였다. 곧 그 문화가 정의되었고 힙합문화의 춤으로 브레이크댄스가 알려지며 힙합댄스와 스트릿댄스에 대한 구분이 불분명하게 되었다. 힙합음악과 문화의 정체성이 확고해지고 프리스타일힙합댄스 그리고 힙합과는 별개의 배경 속에서 탄생한 하우스댄스, 보깅 등의 새로운 춤이 스트릿댄스의 범주에 속하게 된다. 기술 발전과 사회의 변화에 의해 비형식적 문화 형성을 위한 공간은 온라인으로까지 확대되었고 이를 바탕으로 새로운 춤 분야가 등장하였다. 이 새로운 춤은 그 발생 초기 기성의 스트릿댄스와 유사한 발전 양상을 띠었으나 현재 해당 분야의 전문가들은 이 분야의 특성을 언급하며 그에 속하는 것에 반대하고 있다. 그러나 그들이 주장하는 해당 분야의 특징은 기성의 모든 춤 분야에서 과거부터 나타나고 있는 그리고 사회의 변화에 따라 변화되고 있는 모든 춤 분야의 공통적 현상이다. 현재 소위 ‘코레오그래피’라 일컬어지는 것은 사회의 변화에 따라 함께 변화한 스트릿댄스와는 다른 고유의 특성이 존재하지 않는다. 만약 그 구분을 계속해서 주장하고자 한다면 춤 장르로서의 구분이 아닌 ‘실용안무’ 또는 ‘자유형안무’와 같은 명칭의 춤 창작과 향유 방식에 대한 문화적 관점의 구분이 더 명확하다. 본 연구에서 해당 춤 분야의 움직임 형식은 기성 스트릿댄스 세부 장르의 진화된 형태 또는 움직임 형식으로부터 구애받지 않는 프렉티컬프리스타일(Practical Freestyle) 같은 새로운 세부 장르로서 그 범주에 속하는 것으로 사료된다. 그리고 본 연구 이후 스트릿댄스 세부 분야의 개념적 탐구가 이루어져야 하며, 새로운 춤 분야의 개념, 정체성 등에 관한 연구가 더욱 구체적으로 이루어져야 할 것을 제언한다.

영문 초록

This study examined changes in street dance concepts and categories according to the times. About 70 years have passed since 1960 when Locking, considered the most historical and oldest in the street dance category, and in order for street dance to evolve and enjoy like ballet and be recognized by everyone, academic consideration and reproduction of the resulting value must coexist. Literature research was conducted based on prior research and interviews with related experts, and the results are as follows. The word street used in street dance has a symbolic meaning of a space of culture that is not just a street, but an informal and freely formed, and based on this, the concept of street dance in the early days was formed. The music, fashion, language, and social background enjoyed by those who formed the culture during the time of street dance were combined to form a new subculture. And before hip-hop music and culture occurred, street dance of the time, popping, locking, and waacking, belonged to that category. Since then, the break beat generated by DJing, the established street dance, and the current B-boying have become known through the media under the name of break dance. Soon after, hip-hop music occurred. Soon, the culture was defined, and break-dancing became known as a dance of hip-hop culture, and the distinction between hip-hop dance and street dance became unclear. The identity of hip-hop music and culture will be solidified, and new dances such as house dance and voguing, which were born in a separate background from freestyle hip-hop, will fall into the category of street dance. Due to technological development and changes in society, the space for forming an informal culture was expanded to online, and a new dance field emerged based on this. This new dance had a similar development pattern to established street dance in the early days of its occurrence, but experts in the field are now opposed to belonging to it, citing the characteristics of the field. However, the characteristics of the field they claim are common phenomena in all established dance fields that have appeared in the past and are changing according to changes in society. Currently, so-called 'choreography' does not have its own characteristics different from street dance that has changed with changes i n society. If you continue to insist on the distinction, the distinction between cultural perspectives on dance creation and enjoyment methods such as 'practical choreography' or 'free choreography' is clearer, not as a dance genre. In this study, the movement form of the dance field is considered to belong to the category as a new detailed genre such as Practical Freestyle, which is not limited by the evolved form or movement form of the established street dance detailed genre. And after this study, it is suggested that conceptual exploration of the detailed field of street dance should be conducted, and that research on the concept and identity of the new dance field should be conducted in more detail.
