국문 초록

본 연구는 한국에서 학사학위 과정에 있는 외국인 유학생 중 학사경고 경험이 있는 학생들의 학업적 저성취 원인, 학사경고 경험에 대한 인식, 극복 노력 및 지원 요구사항을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 학사경고를 경험한 외국인 유학생 30명을 대상으로 학업적 저성취의 원인을 파악하고자 설문조사를 실시하였고, 학사경고 경험에 대한 원인 인식, 이를 극복하기 위한 노력, 지원 요구사항에 대한 학생들의 의견을 심도 있게 알아보고자 심층 면담을 진행하였다. 설문을 통하여 수집한 양적 연구 자료는 기술 통계 분석을 실시하였고, 심층 면담을 거쳐 수집한 자료는 전사하여 질적 연구방법론 중 현상학적 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 학사경고 경험이 있는 외국인들은 학업적응 영역, 학업적 영역, 개인내적 영역, 환경적 영역의 순으로 어려움을 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 학사경고 경험에 대한 원인의 인식에는 14가지의 하위 요인과 인지적, 정의적, 외부적 요인 등 3가지의 상위요인이 추출되었다. 첫째, 인지적 요인에는 내용 이해와 학습 참여의 어려움, 학습 계획 설정 및 시간 관리의 미비, 과제 수행 및 시험 준비 미숙, 출결 관리 미비 등이 포함되었고, 정의적 요인은낮은 학습 동기 및 학사경고 극복 의지, 문제해결에 대한 소극적 태도, 교수자와 동료 학습자들에 대한 감정적 요인 등을 포함하는 것으로 나타났다. 외부적 요인에는 수업 난이도 급증, 정보 부족, 교육과정의 차이 등의 요소가 포함되었다. 또한 질적 분석을 통하여 이들이 학사경고 극복을 위하여 기울인 여러 가지 다면적인 노력과, 개선을 위하여 제안한 요구사항들도확인되었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 점차 늘어나는 외국인 유학생들의 학업적 어려움에 대한 다각적 이해와 이를 통한 실질적지원 방향 등을 제시하는 데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate the experience of academic probation of foreign students enrolled in undergraduate programs at a Korean university. It includes causes of their academic underachievment, their perceptions of the experience, their efforts to overcome it, and their requests for help. A survey and extensive one-on-one interviews were conducted for 30 foreign students. The survey responses were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics and the in-depth interview data were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using the phenomenological method of qualitative analysis. The results of the quantitative analysis indicated that the causes of foreign students’ academic underachievement lied in the order of their academic maladjustment, academic features, individuals’ internal reasons, and environmental reasons. The qualitative analysis of the interview data found 3 major components and 14 sub-components about how the foreign students perceived their academic probation experience. The cognitive component included lack of understanding and participation, poor management of study plans and time, and poor performance in assignments and exam preparation. The affective component included low motivation, passive attitude to problems, and negative emotions towards Korean professors and peers. The external component included increased difficulty of class, lack of information, and curriculum differences. The qualitative analysis results also identified multifaceted efforts that the students made to overcome underachievement and their requests for help. Implications of the study are discussed.
