노년기의 배우자 사별 이후 적응과정에 관한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 생애사건 중 하나인 배우자 사별을 경험한 노인들을 대상으로 사별 이후 홀로서기 적응과정을 현상학적으로 살펴본 것으로, 그 목적은 사별 이후 노인들의 새로운 삶의 적응을 돕기 위함이었다. 본 연구의 참여자는 광주광역시, 전남 및 충남 지역에 거주하는 10명의 65세 이상 고령자, 배우자를 상실한 시점은 60세 이상, 그리고 배우자와의 사별기간이 3-10년 경과한 자들이었다. 이들에 대해 심층면접을 실시했으며, 그 결과로 얻은 자료는 Colaizzi(1978)의 방법으로 분석하였다. 배우자 사별 이후 노년기 삶의 현상과 적응과정을 탐색한 연구 결과는 ‘사별의 슬픔’, ‘홀로 남은 현실’, ‘극복과 적응’ 및 ‘미래의 자아 찾기’의 4개 범주 및 16개 하위범주로 도출되었다. 배우자를 사별한 노인은 사별 직후의 위기를 딛고 적응 기간을 거친 이후 홀로서기를 위한 자신의 새로운 삶을 이해하고 삶의 적응을 위해 노력함을 알 수 있었다. 다만 시간이 흐를수록 극복 정도가 모두 향상되는 것은 아니었다. 따라서 사별 초기뿐만 아니라 사별 이후 경과기간이 오래된 노인들에게도 사회적인 관심과 효과적인 중재가 필요함을 알 수 있다. 더불어 배우자와 사별한 노인의 사회적 지지를 높이기 위한 서비스 프로그램 개발과 평가가 시급하며, 사회적 관심을 높이는 복지정책 역시 요구됨을 논의했다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to understand older widow/widowers’ adaptation and help their adjustment to a new and single life in olde age after experiencing spousal bereavement. The study was designed qualitatively to use phenomenological approach, investigating the phenomena of the life encountered by them and their adjustment process to the bereavement. The participants were 10 older adults who aged between 65 and 86 years old, residing in the Gwangju Metropolitan area or Jeonnam and Chungnam Provinces. The participants, who bereaved their spouses at the age of 60 years or older, were only included in order to focus on exploring the phenomena of adjusting to spousal bereavement in old age. The duration of the bereavement for them ranged between 3 to 10 years. Data collected via in-depth interviews, and the data were analyzed using Colaizzi(1978)’s phenomenological method. As results, there found the main four categories and 16 sub-categories. The 4 categories were ‘sorrow at the loss of a spouse’, ‘the reality of being left alone’, ‘overcoming and adaptation’, and ‘searching for a future self.’ The findings showed that the elderly widow/widowers endeavored to adjust themselves to a new environment by overcoming and coping with the crisis of bereavement, and to find a new life of living single after the spousal loss. It was discussed that most of them needed social supports, and thus a variety of services, programs, or welfare policies should be provided or developed for their effective adjustment to spousal bereavement.
