종교, 교육은 가능한가?

국문 초록

오늘날 우리는 두뇌와 의식의 관련성에 대한 수많은 과학적 증거가 쏟아져 나오고 있는 상황을 목도하고 있다. 마음과 생각 자체에 대해 근본 물음을 제기하는 선불교(禪佛敎)도 뇌과학(腦科學, brain science)이 제시하는 결과에 영향을 받을 수밖에 없을 것이다. 그러나 뇌과학이 선불교의 전개 및 교육에 어떤 기여를 할 것인가를 논하기 전에, 무엇보다도 먼저 이 두 분야가 만날 수는 있는 것인가에 대한 반성이 선행되어야 할 것이다. 만남에 대한 반성이 필요한 이유는 선불교의 전개와 뇌과학의 연구가 각각 무형(無形)인 마음과 유형(有形)인 뇌에서 시작하여 서로의 극단을 향하기 때문이다. 선불교는 교육 방법이나 목표 자체를 문제 삼음으로써 마음이 현전(現前)하는 매우 보기 드문 종교라 할 수 있다. 한편, 뇌과학은 뇌의 물질성을 강조하지만 결과적으로 상식적으로 수용했던 물질의 범위를 벗어나 비물질적 마음이나 의식으로 향한다. 논자는 그 중심에 앎과 상(相)의 문제가 놓여있음을 보여줌으로써 논의를 시작할 것인데, 앎은 과학뿐만 아니라 종교의 원인 및 근원과도 맞닿아있기 때문이다. 그러므로 과학적 앎도 ‘무엇에 대한 앎’으로 규정되지만, 종교적 앎과 마찬가지로 ‘앎 자체의 앎’으로도 규정될 수 있는지의 문제는 본 논의에서 다루어야 할 중요한 문제가 될 것이다. 먼저 ‘무엇에 대한 앎’은 대상에 대한 것이며 相과 관련된 문제임을 보인 후, 이를 뇌과학을 통해 검토할 것이다. 그리고 ‘앎 자체의 앎’은 어떤 相에도 머무르지 않는 것이며 非相의 문제가 됨을 보인 후, 이를 선불교를 통해 검토할 것이다. 그러나 뇌과학이 탐구하는 것은 相일 뿐이고 선불교는 非相을 촉발시킨다하더라도, 뇌과학도 ‘앎 자체의 앎’일 수 있음을 또 선불교도 ‘무엇에 대한 앎’일 수 있음을 보인 후, 이를 근거로 『금강경(金剛經)』을 통해 相과 非相의 간극을 분명하게 밝힐 것이다. 끝으로 “종교교육으로 이러한 간극을 무화시킬 수 있는가?”라는 문제를 제기한 후, ‘체험된 직접성’의 의미와 더불어 ‘종교교육 논변’을 논구할 것이다.

영문 초록

In these days, we witness tremendous scientific evidences for the relation of the brain with the consciousness. Zen buddhism also which presents the fundamental question of the mind and the thought itself has been affected by brain science. But prior to discussions about facts which brain science gives a contribution to progresses and educations of zen buddhism, first of all we should contemplate in advance the encounter with theses two areas. It is the reason, which needs to contemplate for this encounter, that progresses of zen buddhism and studies of brain science initiate from the mind with the non form and the brain with the form respectively, and then orient to the ends of each others. Because zen buddhism which the mind has appeared abruptly by questioning the course of education or the goal itself, it is very rare to find. Meanwhile brain science emphasizes the materiality of the brain, but finally orients to the non material mind or consciousness beyond the region of matter which we have accepted commonly. We have started by addressing the problem of the knowledge and the form in the center of this situation, since the knowledge relate not only to the science but also to the origin of religion. Then the scientific knowledge also could be oriented to ‘the knowledge about something’, but it is important problem in this discussion that whether to ‘the knowledge of knowledge itself’ as like the religious knowledge or not. First, we show that ‘the knowledge about something’ is about the object and relates with the form, then could be investigated by brain science. And we show that ‘the knowledge of knowledge itself’ is not fixed by any forms and relates with the non form, then could be investigated by zen buddhism. Nevertheless in the base of these facts, revealing knowledge that both the form which brain science has studied and the non form which zen buddhism has prompted to, we show that brain science could prompt to ‘the knowledge of knowledge itself’ and zen buddhism to ‘the knowledge about something’, we have shed light on the gap between the form and the non form by the 金剛經. Finally, after “By the religion to be taught, could we eliminate this gap?”, then we would argue ‘the argument of religion to bo taught’ through the meaning of the experience immediacy.
