바깥놀이가 유아 발달에 미치는 효과에 대한 메타분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 유아 발달을 위한 바깥놀이의 효과를 종합적이고 계량적인 결과로 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 국내 네 개의 데이터베이스에서 박사학위 논문 및 학술지 논문을 수집하였고, 선정기준에 맞는 연구 총 145편의 연구, 245개의 사례 수를 대상으로 메타분석을 실시하였다. 분석에 포함된 연구는 2003년 10월부터 2021년 4월까지의 연구였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 바깥놀이가 유아 발달에 미치는 평균 효과 크기는 1.52로 매우 큰 효과 크기로 나타났다. 바깥놀이의 유아 발달영역별 효과 크기는 정서발달, 신체 발달, 언어발달, 인지발달, 사회성 발달 순으로, 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 바깥놀이 유형별 효과 크기는 자연탐구활동, 운동놀이활동, 모래․물놀이활동, 산책활동, 작업활동의 순으로, 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 개별 연구 간 효과 크기는 큰 크기의 이질성이 나타났으며, 이를 설명하는 조절 변수는 유아의 연령과 인원이었다. 본 연구 결과를 통해 바깥놀이의 효과를 입증하였으며, 이를 근거로 바깥놀이의 활성화를 위한 다양한 실외 영역별 놀이 활동의 개발과 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic and comprehensive investigation into the effects of outdoor play on young children’s development. Meta-analysis was carried out on 245 cases in 145 studies which met the selection criteria from doctoral theses and journal articles published in Korea from October 2003 to April 2021. The results were as follows: First, the mean effect size of outdoor play on young children’s development was 1.52, which is significant according to Cohen’s effect size criterion. The effect size of outdoor play was the largest in emotional development, followed by physical development, language development, cognitive development, and social development. Among the outdoor play categories, nature inquiry activities showed the largest effect size, followed by physical activities, sand·water play, taking a walk, and working activities. Second, the effect sizes that each study reported were heterogeneous and the moderating variables which explained the differences were the age of the children and the number of children in the experiment group. This study resulted in verifying the effect of outdoor play, which would serve as a rationale for developing and conducting further research on play activities in various outdoor areas in order to expand outdoor play in early childhood education settings.
