기질에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 최근 학문적 및 실용적 중요성이 확장되고 있는 기질의 역사에 대해 살펴보고, 다양한 기질 연구자들의 정의를 종합하여 통합된 기질 정의를 내리며, 대표적인 기질 모델들의 구조를 종합적으로 분석하여 기질의 요인 구조를 제안하고자 한다. 기질의 역사와 다양한 학자들의 기질의 정의들을 종합해 볼 때, 기질이란 생의 초기부터 나타나는 정서, 행동, 주의 반응에 대한 개인차로, 관찰 가능한 행동방식이며 성인기 성격의 토대이다. 생물학적 기초 및 유전적 요소를 지니며, 시간이나 상황에 걸쳐 비교적 안정적으로 유지되는 개인적 특성이나 환경과의 상호작용을 통해 표현의 범위는 달라질 수 있다. 그리고 기질의 요인 구조를 제안하기 위해, 대표적인 기질 모델인 Thomas와 Chess의 행동유형적 접근, Buss와 Plomin의 규준적 접근, Rothbart의 심리생물학적 접근, Goldsmith와 Campos의 정서 조절 모델, 그리고 Kagan의 행동억제모델을 통합적으로 살펴보고 기질의 요인구조에 대한 연구들을 비교분석하였다. 지금까지의 연구와 각 모델에서 제안하는 기질 요인을 종합하여 기질의 요인 구조를 제안하면 6요인으로 다음과 같다. 활동성(activity), 부정적 정서성(negative emotionality), 행동억제(Behavioral inhibition), 사회적 민감성(Social sensitivity), 긍정적 정서성(Positive emotionality), 의도적 통제(effortful control). 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 시사점 및 후속 연구방향을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This article provides a synthesis review of history, definitions, and structures of temperament. When the history and definition of various scholars are synthesized, temperament is defined as the individualistic differences in emotional, behavioral, attentional reaction tendencies. Differences in temperament disposition developing early in life with strong influences from genetic factors, are seen as the likely foundation of the personality traits and structure of adults. With strong biological and genetic influences, personal traits and interactions with the environment impact the range of expressions produced by one’s temperament. To suggest the factors of temperament, five classical approaches and models were considered: Thomas and Chess’ behavioral approach, Buss and Plomin’s criterial approach, Rothbart’s psychobiological approach, Goldsmith and Campos’ emotion regulation model, and Kagan’s behavioral inhibition model. Combining the presented forms of model and approach, the study concludes six structural factors of temperament: activity, negative emotionality, behavioral inhibition, social sensitivity, positive emotionality, and effortful control. Based on the finding results, limitations of the study, implications in counseling, and suggestions for future study were discussed.
