Exploring students personality traits, attitudes, and achievements in Korean as a foreign language classroom

국문 초록

최근 미국 대학에서 한국어 강좌가 증가함에 따라 한국어를 배우는 학생들의 수준의 차이 그리고 그들의 개인적 특성을 고려한 한국어 교육 및 학습에 대한 연구가 필요한 시점에 이르렀다. 이에 본 연구는 한국어를 배우게 된 학생들의 계기가 무엇이며, 한국어에 대한 태도와 그들의 개인적 특성, 그리고 한국어의 성취가 서로 어떤 관련이 있는지 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 미국의 북서부 주에 위치한 한 대학에서 한국어를 배우는 39명의 학생들이 이 연구에 참여하였다. 양적의 연구방법으로 개인 특성 및 태도를 알아보는 2개의 설문지를 적용하여 조사하였으며, 질적 연구방법으로 교실에서의 관찰과 학생들의 성찰, 그리고 선별된 학생들에 대한 개별 면접을 적용하였다. 연구의 결과, 한국어 학습에 대한 중요한 동기부여자중의 하나는 한국 문화에 대해 배우고자 하는 것이었다. 문화적으로 동기부여가 된 학생들은 그렇지 않은 다른 그룹의 학생들보다 한국어를 지속적으로 배우고자 하는 욕구가 있었으며, 이중의 언어를 더 많이 구사하며, 또한 읽기와 듣기에서 더 높은 점수를 얻었다. 학생들의 외향성은 그들의 언어에 대한 태도와 관련이 있었다. 또한 개방적 특성과 상냥함은 읽고 말하기와 관련이 있었으며, 양심적인 성격(conscientious)과 듣기는 부정적인 상관관계가 있었다. 이에 따른 결과를 논의하였으며 또한 한국어 학습에 대한 제언을 하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore what initiated students, in an intermediate Korean class, to learn Korean, and how their personality traits and attitudes toward the Korean language are related to their learning and achievements. Thirty-nine students participated in the study at a university located in a northwestern state in the United States. A quantitative approach was applied with two questionnaires, personality traits and attitudes tests, while a qualitative approach with classroom observation, students’ reflections, and selected individual interviews were applied. Learning about Korean culture was an important motivator for students’ Korean learning. The culturally motivated students are more likely to keep the Korean language, become more bilingual, and achieve higher scores in reading and listening than the students in the other group. Students’ extraversion is related to their language attitude. Agreeableness is related to reading and speaking. Openness is related to reading and speaking. Conscientiousness and listening are negatively correlated. Results are discussed and suggestions are made.
