선(善)의 실현과 메타프락시스

국문 초록

현대 민주주의 사회에서 정치와 교육의 세속화에 따르는 가치 상대주의는 보편적 가치에 대한 의문과 교육의 자율성의 진정한 의미에 관한 질문을 불러일으킨다. 본 연구는 가치의 실현을 위한 실천으로서의 종교와 정치와 교육 사이의 공통점과 차이를 밝힘으로써 이 문제를 해명하는 데에 목적이 있다. 통상적 관점에 따르면, 종교가 초월적 차원에서의 자아의 변화를 지향하는 것과는 달리, 정치는 현상적 차원에서의 세계의 변화를 지향하며, 교육은 현상적 차원에서의 자아의 변화를 담당하는 것으로 간주된다. 그러나 성리학 이론과 메타프락시스의 관점에서 시사되는 바와 같이, 교육은 현상적 차원과 초월적 차원의 관련으로 성립하며, 초월적 차원에서 자아의 변화는 곧 세계의 변화를 의미한다고 보아야 한다. 종교와 정치와 교육은 모든 가치를 포괄하는 표준으로서의 ‘선’(善)의 실현이라는 동일한 이상을 추구한다는 점에서 별개의 영역으로 분리될 수 없지만, 보편적 가치의 확립은 교육적 실천에 의하여 가능하다는 점에서 종교와 정치와의 관련에서 교육은 근본적 위치를 차지한다. 오우크쇼트의 사상은 교육과 정치와 종교를 심성함양에 동원되는 매체의 성격에 의하여 규정하는 메타프락시스 3부론의 논의에 비추어 그 의의가 새롭게 조명될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The value relativism accompanied by the secularization of politics and education in modern democratic society raises questions about the possibility of universality of values and the true meaning of the autonomy of education. The purpose of this study is to clarify this problem by identifying the difference and relation between religion, politics, and education as three distinct modes of practice for actualization of values. According to the ordinary point of view, politics is aiming at the change of the world at phenomenal level, whereas religion is oriented towards the change of the self at transcendental level, and education is responsible for the change of the self at phenomenal level. In contrast to this, as implied by the theory of neo-Confucianism in view of metapraxis, the true meaning of education can be explained in terms of the relation of the phenomenal dimension and the transcendental one, and the change of self in the transcendental dimension is itself the change of the world. Religion, politics and education pursue the same ideal of the actualization of the goodness as the unmanifested standard of all values, this is the reason why they should not be regarded as separate spheres. However, education has a fundamental status in relation to religion and politics in that the establishment of universal values is possible only through educational practice. The thoughts of Michael Oakeshott could be newly illuminated in light of the discourse of metapractial triology which defines and relates education, politics and religion by elucidating three different types of media for cultivating human mind-nature.
