정약용 성기호설(性嗜好說)의 교육학적 함의

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 정약용 성기호설의 교육적 의미를 검토하기 위한 것이다. 성기호는 주희 성즉리의 추상성을 비판하고 그 대안으로 제시된 개념이다. 성기호는 맹자 성선에서 성이 가진 기호의 성격을 특별히 강조한 성론으로서 상제로부터 부여된 성이 절대 선과 덕을 기호하며 나아간다는 뜻을 갖고 있다. 성의 자기 운동성은 도심으로 나타나며 인간은 도심을 통하여 상제를 밝게 섬기는 성인에 이를 수 있다. 사단은 도심의 구체적인 표현으로 이 사단을 확충해나갈 때 인의예지의 사덕을 이룰 수 있다. 기호로서의 성은 선을 파악할 수 있는 능력이 있고 그것이 끝없이 선을 지향해 간다는 점에서 지적 능동성을 갖는다. 성기호가 함의하고 있는 지적 능동성은 인간 지성이 신적 지성에 도달하도록 만든다. 성기호는 인간 본성이 가장 잘 드러나는 교육사태와 교사와 학생의 교육적 관계를 열망한다. 교사와 학생의 교육적 관계는 학교에서의 교사와 학생뿐 아니라 나와 이웃, 나와 신과의 관계로 확장된다. 기호로서의 성의 움직임에 존재를 맡겨 인간의 지식을 신의 지식에 이르도록 힘쓰는 교사의 노력은 자기 자신과 더불어 학생을 신과 유사한 존재로 만들어 간다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the educational implications of Jeong Yak-yong s(丁若鏞) theory of Sungkiho(性嗜好, fundamental orientation of human nature). Sungkiho is a concept that criticizes the abstraction of Chu Hsi s(朱熹) Seongjeukri(性卽理, nature is principle) and is presented as an alternative. Sungkiho is a human nature theory that emphasizes the character s personality in the Seongseon(性善, understanding of the innate goodness of human nature), Mencius(孟子), means that the human nature granted by Sangje(上帝, God of governing the Sky) move toward with a preference for absolute good and virtue. Sungkiho s self-movement appears as a Dosim(道心, ethical heart), and humans can reach a saint who serves Sangje brightly through the Dosim. Sadan(四端, four sprouts) will be able to achieve the virtues of Inuiyeji(仁義禮智, humaneness) when expanding the Sadan as a concrete mind of the Dosim. Nature as a preference has an intellectual activeness in that it has the ability to grasp the good and that it aims for the good endlessly. The intellectual activeness implied by Sungkiho s makes the human intelligence reach the divine intelligence. Sungkiho is eager for the educational relationship between the teacher and the student and the education situation in which human nature is best revealed. The educational relationship between the teacher and the student extends not only to the teacher and the student at school, but also to the relationship with me, my neighbors, and God. The teacher s efforts to make human knowledge reach God s knowledge by entrusting it to the movement of the nature as a preference make the student a God-like being along with himself.
