국문 초록

＜장가르＞는 세계적으로 널리 알려진 몽골 영웅서사시로 <게세르>, <마나스>와 함께 중앙아시아의 3대 서사시로 꼽힌다. 주로 러시아 연방의 칼미크[Kalmyk], 몽골, 중국 등 지역에서 전승되고 있는데, 중국의 경우 서북 신장[新疆] 위구르자치구 오이라트[衛拉特, Oirat] 몽골족 거주 지역에 분포되어 있는 것으로 확인된다. 역사적 특성상 해방 전까지만 해도 중국에서는 <장가르>의 존재가 잘 알려지지 않았다. 불모지나 다름이 없던 중국에서 <장가르>가 처음 알려지게 된 것은 벤위안[邊垣]이라는 한족 남자에 의해서다. 1950년 벤위안이 신장 감옥에 수감되어 있을 당시 몽골족 재소자로부터 전해들은 <장가르>를 출소한 뒤 기억에 의존하여 한어(汉语)로 출판한 것이 시작이다. 그런데 얼마 지나지 않아 곧바로 문화대혁명이 발발하면서 <장가르> 연구는 침체기를 맞이하게 된다. 중국에서의 <장가르> 연구는 문화대혁명이 끝나고 1978년에 이르러서야 다시 활기를 띤다. 내몽골대학의 보얀히식[寶音賀希格]을 비롯하여 보렌바야르[佈仁巴雅爾], 신장인민출판사의 토·바드마[托·巴德瑪], 린첸[仁欽] 등 연구자들이 직접 채록, 정리한 <장가르> 구전자료를 출판하면서이다. 이를 시작으로 수많은 <장가르> 구전자료집들이 본격적으로 출판되는데, 토도[Todo] 몽골문, 위구르 몽골문, 한어, 영어, 라틴어 등 다양한 민족의 언어로도 번역되어 <장가르> 연구의 기초자료 구실을 하게 된다. 이를 기반으로 중국의 <장가르> 연구는 오늘날까지도 꾸준히 이루어지고 있고, “장가르학”이라는 전문 학술분야까지 형성하며 방대한 연구 성과를 축적하였다.

영문 초록

Jangar is a Mongolian heroic epic, and it has been chosen as one of three major epics of Central Asia, along with Geser and Manas. It is mainly known in Kalmyk of the Russian Federation, Mongolia, and China. It has been confirmed that it is spread throughout an area, Oirat, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where Mongolian people live. Prior to the liberation, this heroic epic remained unknown in China. Afterward, Benwian (邊垣), a Han man, first introduced this epic to China, where no one had heard of it. In 1950, when he was imprisoned in Xinjang, he translated this story, recited by a Mongolian inmate, into Chinese and published it. Soon after the Cultural Revolution occurred, research on this issue dropped. In China, research on this epic resumed in 1978, a decade after the Cultural Revolution. An oral document entitled Jangar was published by researchers such as Boyanhisik (寶音賀希格), Borenbayar (佈仁巴雅爾) at the National University of Mongolia, and the editors of the Xinjang Public Book Agency, Tobadma (托·巴德) and Linchen (仁欽). On the occasion of this publication, many oral documents on this epic were published and translated into many languages including Todo Mongolian, Uygur Mongolian, Chinese, English, and Latin. These records are fundamental sources for follow-up studies. On the basis of such records, studies on this epic continue up to today. A wealth of outcomes have been gathered and, eventually, a special scientific branch of knowledge called “Jangar Studies” was developed.
