국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 전쟁기념관의 전시사진이 표상하는 한국전쟁의 공식기억이 창출되는 구조를 검토하고, 공식기억을 전승하는 교육적 장치로 기능하는 전쟁기념관의 문화 정치적 의미를 분석하는 것에 있다. 전쟁기념관에서 한국전쟁에 관한 공식기억이 창출되는 구조가, 전시 사진의 자의적 ‘선택’에 의하여 이루어진 점이라는 사실과, 이 과정에서 개개인의 ‘자전적 기억’이 배제되고 공식적으로는 망각되어 버리는 지점에서 이루어지고 있다. 전쟁기념관은 사진이라는 매체가 지닌 미디어적 특성과 ‘전시’라는 재생산 양상을 모두 살필 수 있는 공간이며 특히 상설전시관인 6.25전쟁실의 경우 기념관의 건립목적 하에 공식기억을 창출하는 사진과 그에 관련한 디오라마를 ‘선택’하거나 ‘배제’하였다. 전쟁기념관의 사진은 언론매체에서 파편적으로 제시된 이미지보다 연속적이며 집약적으로 제시하여 언론매체에 수록된 사진에 비해 교육적 효과가 크다고 할 수 있다. 그런데 전쟁기념관에서 이루어지는 교육의 목표가 ‘반전’이나 ‘평화’ 혹은 ‘인류애’라는 보편적인 가치를 강조하는 것이 아니라, ‘안보’라고 하는 변형된 형태의 전쟁의 논리를 합리화 하는 것에 중점을 두고 있다. 전쟁기념관은 점차로 다양한 교육방식을 동원하여 국가의 공식기억을 전승하고 있고 그 내용의 중심은 어디까지나 ‘국가안보’에 맞춰져 있었던 것이다. 이것은 전쟁 자체의 비극성을 강조하며 전쟁에 대한 비판적 사상이나 반전(反戰)에 관한 내용과는 상반된 것이라 볼 수 있다. 현 시점에서 요구되는 것은 한국전쟁에 대한 단일한 기억이 아니라, 복수의 기억, 복수의 이미지를 표상하는 과정에서 전쟁의 비극과 평화에 대한 가치의 인식이라 할 수 있다. 이런 점에서 전쟁기념관을 ‘대상’으로 삼아 작품 활동을 진행하고 있는 일군의 전후 사진가들의 작업이 새롭게 부각되고 있다는 사실에 주목할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the structure where official memories of the Korean War are created by exhibiting wartime photographs in a war memorial museum, and analyzes war memorial museum’s cultural-political meaning that functions as an educational device for the transmission of official memories. While the official memories of the Korean War are arbitrarily ‘selected,’ individuals’ ‘autobiographical memories’ are excluded and some part of memories officially disappear into oblivion. The wartime photographs in the war memorial museum have complex aspects of photograph as medium. It is medium for recording but at the same time artistic works. The war memorial museum is the place where both photographs’ characteristic as media and reproduction of ‘wartime’ can be examined. Particularly, in the case of 6.25 permanent exhibition, photographs, which can produce official memories and its diorama, were ‘selected’ or ‘excluded’ based on the museum’s purpose. The photographs in the war memorial museum play a more significant roll than the photographs that are inscribed in the press. While the former provides images in a consecutive and intensive way, the latter provides them as fragments. Education that is provided by the war memorial museum does not emphasize universal values such as ‘anti war,’ ‘peace,’ or ‘humanity.’ Instead, it focuses on rationalizing the transformed logic of war- ‘security.’ In other words, the war memorial museum places priority to ‘national security’ by using various educational methods and passing down national official memories; this is opposite to the critical ideas on war. What needs to be brought an attention is the awareness of the tragedy of war and value of peace, which is able to only by representing multitude memories and images rather than homogeneous memories of the Korean War. In this sense, a group of photographers who target the war memorial museum itself as an ‘object’ should be newly magnified.
