국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 만 5세 자녀를 둔 취업모의 초등학교 입학준비에 대한 이해를 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 Holland, Skinner, Lachicotte와 Cain(1998)의 구상의 세계(a figured world) 를 분석적 틀로 사용했다. 구상의 세계란 특정한 세계를 둘러싼 문화와 담론 속에서 참여자가 역동적으로 정체성을 형성되는 과정을 알아보는 이론으로, 구상의 세계를 통해 취업모의 자녀교육을 둘러싼 문화와 사회적 담론, 그 속에서 고군분투하는 취업모들의 모습을 살펴볼 수 있다. 연구 대상은 만 5세 자녀를 둔 취업모 6명이며, 각 1회 1시간씩 개인 면담을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 취업모들은 초등학교를 본격적인 학업이 시작되는 곳이라 생각하고 있었다. 이와 함께 취업모들은 육아에 있어 보조양육자의 도움을 받고 있었으나, 초등학교 준비는 주양육자의 영역이라고 생각하고 있었다. 둘째, 참여자들은 자녀교육이 궁극적으로 어머니의 책임이라는 모성담론과 초등학교 입학 후 어머니들과의 교류를 강조하는 네트워크 담론의 영향을 받고 있었다. 셋째, 취업모들은 자녀교육에 대한 구상의 세계 속에서 시간부족을 극복하고자 경험의 질을 추구하고 경제적 자본을 이용해 좋은 양육자로서의 정체성을 획득하고자 노력하였다. 그러나 학교입학을 앞두고 네트워크 담론과 관련해 기존의 방식의 어려움을 느꼈고, 이에 대한 대책으로 휴직, 반차, 퇴직을 통해 돌파구를 찾고자 했다. 본 연구는 구상의 세계라는 새로운 시각을 제공하고 초등학교 입학 준비하는데 역동적인 모습을 살펴보았다는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to gain insight into the working mothers’perception on getting ready for school, using the framework of the figured world. The participants of the study were 6 working mothers of 7 year-old-children. Individual interviews were held for one hour per person. The finding s of the study were as follows. First, working mothers understood that elementary school was the place where the actual study began so that children needed to know Hangul and build self-help skills before entering the school. They thought the primary caregivers were the ones who had the responsibility of education and care. Second, there were discourses that mothers were the persons in charge for children’s education, and mothers’networks were essential for their children’s success at school. Third, despite many difficulties, working mothers were agents who could use their resources at hand to make the best choice for their children: they pursued the quality interaction with their children and tried breaking through time constraints. This study has its significance in that it provided an alternative perspective of the figured world to examine being parents.
