부모배경에 따른 교육불평등은 심화되었는가?

국문 초록

부모세대의 사회ㆍ경제적 불평등 확대가 자식세대에 이어져 계층간 학력 격차가 심화되고, 사회적 이동을 악화하며, 계층간 격차를 고착화 시킬 것이라는 주장이 설득력을 높이고 있다. 따라서, 부모배경이 학생 학업성취도에 미치는 영향은 학교교육 뿐 만 아니라 경제적ㆍ사회적 불평등과 양극화 측면에서 모든 국가 사회의 핵심 이슈가 되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 교육불평등 심화를 증명하기 위한 필요충분조건을 구하여, 교육불평등 심화현상이 전세계적인 추세인지 여부를 통계적으로 증명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 지난 2000년부터 2015년 까지 매 3년 마다 총 6 회 실시된 PISA 원자료를 활용하여, 주요 5 개국(한국, 핀란드, 독일, 일본, 미국)의 부모 경제ㆍ사회ㆍ문화적 지표 (ESCS: Economic, Social and Cultural Status Index) 가 학생 학업성취도에 미치는 영향을 시계열적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 학생학업성취도에 미치는 부모의 영향은 국가별로 다른 형태를 보이고 있다는 것과 교육불평등 심화현상은 모든 나라에서 동일하게 발생하는 일반적인 추세가 아니라는 것을 밝혔다. 특히 한국의 경우, 기존 연구결과와는 달리 부모배경의 학생 학업성취도에 미치는 영향이 증가하고 있지 않다는 것을 통계적으로 증명하였다.

영문 초록

There is a deep concern that the socio-economic inequality of parents will be inherited to their children through education. So, the assertions are being empowered that the difference of academic achievement of their children have been enlarged, and that the social mobility have been weakened. Therefore, it becomes an important issue in every countries whether the effects of the parents’ socio-economic background on academic achievement of their children is increasing, that is, whether the educational inequality is widening. In this paper, the necessary and sufficient condition is derived to prove statistically whether the educational inequality is increasing. By analyzing the PISA raw data which have measured students’ achievements six times every 3 years between 2000 and 2015, it is shown that parents’ background impacts on their children’s achievement differently according to their nation, and that the educational inequality is not widening world-widely. Also, it is statistically proved that, in case of Korea, parents’ impacts on their children’s achievement have not been deepened. It is contrary to the previous assertions that the impacts have been deepened.
