미국과 영국의 교육사회학 연구 동향: 2000년 이후

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 2000년 이후 출간된 교육사회학 (편)저서 12권과 미국과 영국에서 각각 발간하고 있는 대표적인 교육사회학 학술지인 Sociology of Education(SOE) 및 British Journal of Sociology of Education(BJSE)에 2000-2010년 게재된 논문 579편을 분석하여 2000년 이후 미국과 영국의 교육사회 학 연구동향을 검토하였다. 교육사회학 (편)저서들을 통하여 교육사회학 이론의 확장, 글로벌화의 맥락에서 교육을 조망한 연구 확대, 고등교육의 사회학적 연구 확대, 교육과 영향을 주고받는 교육 외적 체제 및 환경의 연구 범위 확대, 평생학습과 시민사회 등 새로운 연구주제의 등장과 같은 동 향을 파악할 수 있었다. 교육사회학 학술지의 경우 ‘교육성취 결정(15.7%)’과 ‘사회계층?가족자 본?가족구조(13.6%)’ 관련 논문들이 가장 많았다. ‘글로벌화’ 관련 주제를 다룬 논문은 아직 많지 는 않았으나(4.3%) 전반기(2000-05)(1.7%)보다 후반기(2006-10)(7.1%)에 크게 증가하였다. 교육사회학 의 주요 연구주제 가운데 하나인 ‘사회경제적지위 성취와 사회이동’에 관한 논문은 두 학술지 모두 에서 매우 적었으며(3.1%), 전반기(3.7%)에 비해 후반기(2.5%)에 감소하여, 교육에 의해 사회현상을 설명하려는 연구에 비해 교육현상을 사회적 맥락에서 설명하려는 연구들이 절대적으로 많이 수행 되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 취학전 교육과 성인 비형식교육을 사회학적 관점에서 다룬 논문은 소수 에 불과하였고 여전히 대다수의 연구가 학령기 아동과 청(소)년을 대상으로 한 학교교육 중심으로 수행되고 있었다. 또한 두 학술지는 미국과 영국뿐만 아니라 전 세계 다양한 국가를 대상으로 수행 한 연구들을 다수 포함하고 있었으며, 이와 같은 연구들은 전반기(21%)보다 후반기(27.3%)에 더 증 가하여 교육사회학 연구의 글로벌화 경향을 보여주고 있었다. 한편 SOE의 논문들은 일부 연구주제 에 편중된 경향을 보이고 있는 반면 BJSE에서는 다양한 연구주제들이 보다 균형있게 다루어지고 있었으며, 전자에서는 변인간의 관계를 밝히는 계량적 연구(81.4%)가 주류를 이루고 있었던 반면 후자에서는 질적 연구방법(56.1%)을 사용한 연구와 문헌연구(32.8%)가 주류를 이루었고 양적 연구 방법을 사용한 연구는 8.3%에 불과하였다. 이와 같은 방법론적 편중 현상은 최근으로 올수록 더 강 해지고 있었다.

영문 초록

Analyzing 10 books on sociology of education published in the U.S. and the U.K. and 579 articles published in the American journal, the Sociology of Education(SOE) and the British journal, British Journal of Sociology of Education(BJSE) between 2000 and 2010, I examined research trends in the American and British sociology of education since the beginning of the 21st century. From the analysis of the books on the sociology of education, I found the trend of expansions of theoretical perspectives, studies on ‘education and globalization,’ sociological studies on ‘higher education’ and the scope of ‘social systems and environments affecting the educational system.’ As for SOE and BJSE, the proportion of articles related to globalization was still small(4.3%), but increased greatly from the first half of the period for the present study(2000-05)(1.7%) to the second half(2006-10)(7.1%). Studies on preschool education and adult nonformal lifelong learning were few and the majority of studies dealt with formal schooling at the target of school-age children and youths. The researches on ‘individual socioeconomic achievement and social mobility’ which had been one of the major research subjects of the sociology of education took up only a small proportion of the articles(3.1%) and the proportion decreased from the first half(3.7%) to the second half(2.5%) of the period for the present study. In addition, the two journals included a large proportion of studies on other countries than their own country, that is, the U.S. or the U.K. and these studies increased from the first half(21%) to the second half(27.3%) of the period for the present study, which indicates the globalization of researches on the sociology of education. While researches of SOE tended to make too much of certain subjects, BJSE dealt with a variety of research subjects in a more balanced way.
