국문 초록

이 연구는 독립운동가 박용만이 1905년에 도미한 후 1911년부터 1927년까지 출판한 6종의 도서와 출판 과정과 활동이 지닌 의미를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 출간된 6종 도서의 표지, 판권, 서문 등을 중심으로 출판 경위를 조사하고, 도서의 편집 및 제작 방식을 분석하였다. 또한 관련 자료를 분석하여 박용만의 출판활동을 둘러싼 맥락과 의미를 파악하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 박용만은 1910~1920년대 미국과 중국이라는 시공간과 기술적 환경에서 책의 목적과 특성에 맞는 최적의 방법을 찾기 위한 노력을 기울였다. 그 결과 시기와 장소에 따라 출판 활동의 특성이 차별성을 갖게 되었다. 둘째, 박용만의 출판활동은 ‘저자’를 넘어 ‘출판인’의 역할로 확장되었으며, 독립운동 단체 및 인물들과의 사회적 연결망이 중요한 역할을 했다. 셋째, 박용만의 출판 활동은 높은 복잡도와 변화의 속성을 지닌 정치적·사회적·기술적 환경에서 일제강점기 재외한인들이 겪은 많은 어려움을 극복하고 실천한 ‘사회문화적 활동이자 독립운동’이었다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze the meaning of the six books published by independence activist Park Yong-man from 1911 to 1927 after his arrival in the United States in 1905, as well as the publishing process and activities. To this end, the publication circumstances of the six books published were investigated based on the covers, copyrights, and prefaces, and the editing and production methods of the books were analyzed. In addition, related materials were analyzed to identify the context and meaning surrounding Park Yong-man’s publishing activities. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, Park Yong-man made efforts to find the optimal method that suited the purpose and characteristics of the books in the time, space, and technological environments of the United States and China in the 1910s and 1920s. As a result, the characteristics of his publishing activities became differentiated depending on the time and place. Second, Park Yong-man’s publishing activities expanded beyond the role of an “author” to that of a “publisher,” and his social network with independence movement organizations and figures played an important role. Third, Park Yong-man’s publishing activities were a ‘socio-cultural activity and independence movement’ that overcame the many difficulties experienced by overseas Koreans during the Japanese colonial period in a political, social, and technological environment with high complexity and changing characteristics.
