국문 초록

기업 경영의 최근 화두 중 하나는 ESG 경영일 것이다. 본 논문의 목적은 해운기업의 ESG 활동 수준을 연구하는 것이다. 해운업은 투명성이 낮고, 호감도가 낮다고 알려져 있다(Yun, 2022). 세간에 알려진 소문 또는 정성적으로 연구된 해운기업의 ESG 활동 실태를 정량적 분석을 통해 객관적 사실과 부합하는지 검증한다. (사)한국ESG기준원에서 평가 및 공표하는 ESG 등급을 활용해 2010년부터 2022년까지 8,009개 기업-연도 KOSPI 상장기업을 대상으로 분석을 실시한다. 분석결과, 해운기업은 비 해운기업에 비해 ESG 활동 수준이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 기업의 ESG 활동에 관한 연구는 무수히 많이 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 국내 해운기업의 사회적 책임 활동 또는 ESG 활동에 관한 연구는 많지 않다. 본 논문은 국내 해운기업의 ESG 경영 실태를 정량적으로 분석한 최초의 연구라는 점에서 의의가 있다. 해운기업은 IMO 2020, IMO 2050 등 외부 규제에 의한 수동적인 ESG 활동이 아닌 선제적인 ESG 활동에 앞장서 이미지 개선, 경영실적 제고, 기업의 지속가능성을 높이려는 노력을 기울여야 한다.

영문 초록

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management may be one of the recent hot topics in corporate management. The purpose of this paper was to study the level of ESG activities of shipping companies. The shipping industry is known to have low transparency and low favorability (Yun, 2022). This study determined whether ESG activities of shipping companies known to the public or studied qualitatively were consistent with objective facts through quantitative analysis. Analysis was conducted on 8,009 firm-year KOSPI listed companies from 2010 to 2022 using ESG ratings evaluated and published by KCGS. As a result of the analysis, it was found that shipping companies had a lower level of ESG activities than non-shipping companies. Although many research studies have been done on companies' ESG activities, research on corporate social responsibility activities and ESG activities of domestic shipping companies is limited. This paper is significant in that it is the first study to quantitatively analyze ESG management status of domestic shipping companies. Shipping companies should make efforts to improve their images, improve their business performances, and increase corporate sustainability by taking the lead in proactive ESG activities rather than performing passive ESG activities due to external regulations such as IMO 2020 and IMO 2050.
